Hey!

Family is the topic of this LP. This is for all levels, and reinforces not only their vocabulary of family, but perhaps broadens even their idea of family. At the beginning of the LP, I showed them a video of a prison in Philippines, where the prisoners are, I hope, rehabilitated through the mother of the arts, dance. It is interesting to watch. After showing them the video, I asked of them "what are some other ways we can help people come back in society (paint the walls, drama, band, confessional letters, etc), besides dance?" I want them to see we share a common humanity, and that their tax dollars will one day keep a prison system open... and that not only for the distribution of their money, but also for the welfare for other people, we should concern ourselves with a forgotten people (not, of course, simply applying a sentimental liberalism,  justifying all their actions by saying their mom didn't love them enough--which can be true at times, but is no scapegoat at all). Afterwards, I got them to identify the family member and in each photo. The rest of the LP is straight forward. It was a simple lesson plan, and I think the students enjoyed the simplicity and directedness of it. Enjoy.

I created this brief lesson on Modern Family (pilot episode, s01e01) for my low-level high school students.

Materials:

Quick lesson plan:
* Modern Family intro (plenty of info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_Family)
* Quick chat about the traditional family unit and how it has changed (single parents, gay/lesbian couples, adoptions etc...) (5-10 mins)
* Wordsearch. When finished, explain some of the key vocabulary using the .PPT pictures (10-15 mins)
* Watch the episode!  :D (23 mins)
* Questions (make up your own as you watch the episode) (5 mins)

My students understood most of the humour in the show and really enjoyed it, already demanding more!

I had to use this in one of my classes yesterday because my coteach decided to give the kids a break.  My kids were so surprised by some of the things in the episode but overall they found it really funny.  I wouldn't show this with a coteacher who is not really "open" to things. 

I found a family tree online for the modern family cast.  I colored the names out using paint program, printed them, and part of their 'after watching the video' assignment was filling in the family tree and going over it.  I give points for the fastest to complete and then a point for the student to raise their hand and answer the questions.
I then do a lot of questions about how they are related.  Ex. Manny is Luke's ....  A: Brother B: Cousin  C: Uncle  D: Father  Answer:C
It's a nice way to get them to figure out relationships when they have a complicated family tree.

Just a quick little FYI,

One of the scenes in the first episode has Gloria talking about how her ex-husband and her just "fought and made love." She says it like 3 or 4 times in a row, and the Korean subtitles translate to "Have sex, Have sex, have sex."

Showed it in one class, co-teacher said nothing. Showed it in another, different co-teacher was a little horrified. I was too actually. Thought it just translated to, "Make love" and that the students would have no idea what that meant. But yeah, just make sure you either fast forward that part or that the co-teachers are cool with it. (I teach Middle School btw).

Here is an edited .smi subtitle file for the downloaded version of the pilot episode. I have removed the dialogue during Gloria's interview where she says "have sex" and also the "what the ****" from Phil's dialogue. Now you can just play it without worrying about having to fast forward.
