"Friday, I'm in Love" by the Cure
« on: October 11, 2010, 10:51:30 AM »
My first grade middle schoolers really enjoyed this song and lesson, so I'm sharing it with you.  Warning: this takes some prep work (i.e. cutting and laminating).

Materials:
-PPT
-Student Notebooks
-Lyrics handouts (printed 4 sheets per page)
-"Friday, I'm in Love" calendar cut-outs (1 set per group)

1. Introduce the song title, and the band.  You can present facts about the band or just go right into the song.

2. Play the song (embedded in .PPT, via vimeo).  During the song, set up writing relay (post the lyrics around the classroom).

3. Tell the students that they will listen to the song again, but this time play a game: the writing relay game.  Each group of students will have one writer.  Other students will get up, one at a time, go to a lyrics sheet, memorize one line, go back to their seat, and tell the writer.  Then the next student goes, and so on and so on until the song finishes playing.  The team with the most lines is the winner.

I usually post four lyrics sheets, one in each corner.  I make sure to tell the front three groups that they must only look at the back wall lyrics, and vice versa for the back groups.  The middle groups can choose.  During the three minutes the song plays, the classroom will be chaos.  I suggest monitoring lyrics sheets to make sure students aren't cheating, and while you are walking to each seat, check to see what students are writing.

4. Hand out lyrics to students, play the original "Friday, I'm in Love" video, and have them read along.

5. Next, show the calendar and ask them if they remember it.  It will disappear shortly.  Tell them that they will get pieces of the calendar and must remake it based on the lyrics.  They will have 5 minutes.  The first team wins (points).  Some students finish in under a minute, others take 5.  If you have more advanced students, you can easily block out the dates in the image in Word before you print it.

6. After that, I have tell that we will listen two more times.  The first time, they should practice singing along, and the second time they should sing along loudly.  Myself and the co-teacher chooses the best group of singers for more points.

Enjoy!

What a great way to practice days of the week, and expose them to something far superior to K-pop.  Thanks so much!

I love this song and tried to make a short lesson out of it with my higher level 5&6 graders in my club activity. However, they did not enjoy it  :'( They don't seem to like anything but K-Pop.

Good luck to those who use this though. I'm totally jealous.

Win Win Winner :)  Cheers for uploading this  - I've adapted it for my Grade 1 Middle School Girls and it's going down a storm - they're really enjoying it - although I now have the song totally stuck in my head lol

I plan to use this lesson on Monday with my Grade 1 middle school students.
Last week we reviewed the days of the week and I think this sounds like it will be a lot of fun! I will let you know how it goes :)

This looks great and it is perfect as The Cure will be one of the headliners for the Ansan Valley rock festival this summer.  I'm at a low level rural high school so this should go over well with some extra instruction time.

I did this with my 1st grade high schoolers and they had a blast. Except instead of writing relay I made it into a listening challenge. I printed and laminated a few sets of complete lyrics and cut them into strips. My students had to arrange the lyrics into the correct order as they listened to the song. It was difficult, but they enjoyed the challenge!

I used this with Vocational High School students and it worked well too. I included a different listening exercise where I removed the days of the week and a lot of the words that rhymed with each other. We did a vocab game previously and explained rhyming and phonics with some other examples. We listened to the song a couple of time and the students really got into it. The lower level students wouldn't have got the answers only for the rhyming so it was a real success.
