Here is what I have for this lesson.

Period 1 - introduction ppt.

For period 1 I am going to play a game similar to the one in the book. One student goes out of the classroom (they are James Bond). We choose another student in the class to be the spy (which is a secret). When James Bond comes back in the class has to give them simple directions to find the spy. When they are near the spy they have to guess which student is the spy (there is usually a choice of 2 or 4 depending on class layout). I played this game last year with 5th grade and they loved it.

Period 2 - ppt with more info. The game at the end is the explanation of a modified version of the game in the book which I will not play because my students will take 3/4 of the lesson just to cut the things out.

I am going to try teaching my students the hokey cokey in period 3 or 4 as it is good practice for left and right.

I have done a version of the Mario game to review this lesson (thanks for the great template). If they get a slide with the three boxes the student has to say left, straight or right to choose which box.

A Halloween game for this lesson. WARNING: Some scary images, but, I've used the game with 4th graders without any emotional damage. Just review it for appropriateness for your class. Thanks to Rick teacher for the great template, and to others from whom I borrowed images and animation.

I reduced the size of the letters and hope that solves the problem with the hyperlinks. However, if there is still a problem, try using the PPTX version instead of the PPT version. If there is still a problem, just delete the numbers. (Sorry I added them, but they are requested by my co-teacher to speed up play).

i found this at eslwell, i think it would work great for period 1 but setting up the desks in a maze could take forever in my classes. any ideas?


Materials:
Blindfolds (one per team)
Large “Places” flash cards
Small “Places” game cards
A classroom full of desks and chairs arranged in a grid


Take the large place cards and put them face-up on desks scattered throughout the room. Each of the place cards should also get a small stack of game cards next to it. The game cards could be random, or they could be of the same type and pre-selected to make the game flow better. Up to you, though I would only do random if you have plenty of game cards (you don’t want to run out at a station).
Finally, divide the kids into groups. I recommend 4 or 5 kids per group, though 3 or 6 could work.

Gameplay:
The teams each make trains. The first person in each train wears a blindfold. The second person will give the commands for now. Each team also receives a destination card. When the teacher starts a timer, everyone starts. The blindfolded person (who looks at the destination card before donning the blindfold) asks, “where is ~?” The second person proceeds to give directions to the first destination. Upon reaching the destination, the first person removes the blindfold, gives it to the second person, and goes to the end of the train. The second person draws a game card from the stack and asks, “where’s the ~?” for the new destination. He or she then puts the blindfold on, and the new second person starts giving directions to the new destination. The goal is to collect as many cards as possible within the time limit.
The trick is that there are other teams doing the same thing. The person giving directions must be careful to not run into another train. This makes speed even more important. You might teach some supplemental instructions (“slow down,” “speed up,” “go back”) to help them deal with these situations in stride.
I suggest a 10-minute time limit, but you could do shorter or longer, depending on how many cards you have. You can always do another round when the first is done!

I think with adapting it a bit, it would be fine to use the chairs as they are, although you may need to enforce a no-running rule so they trip over their desks.

I've modified my earlier directions ppt so I now attach the modified version. Also, I downloaded a while back, a good Ghostbusters game. Can't remember the original uploader but full credit to him/her! I've modified it slightly (Changed main screen to A-Z, added more marshmallow men, slimes and ghostbuster animations and also made the animations full screen. Also changed the content to obviously suit this lesson. Used some material from the Mario bomb game posted here as well so full credit to you as well)

Anyway hopefully it will be of use and this post will go through. If not I give up!

The bog-standard Directions Missing Gap Worksheet. Bit basic, however, this one is localised to Daejeon. Three of the answers are from the We Are Busy Beavers Shopping (not House!) Song, three are local landmarks. I'm actually planning to do an intro to this on the board as a class activity as I still have a pack of the big Daejeon City Postcards they popped in our welcome bundles, so I'll let them practice the TL with something less hypothetical (for those others in this city, you can pick up more photo packs from the DICC, opposite the central Korail station: free game cards).
