Hello Everyone,
I was hoping we could compile a list of videos that work well in class. My school asks me to show about 10 mins worth of video in each lesson and I'm starting to run out of ideas. Successful videos I've used from youtube are:

OK GO - This Too Shall Pass (just had them write down any vocabulary words they saw in the video)
Annoying Orange - good for teaching slang/expressions
Free Running Videos (for discussion)

I've also showed clips from The Simpsons (Halloween) and Mr. Bean (Taking exams) but the kids have all seen these shows before and find them less exciting.

So what video clips have worked for you?

My biggest winner- kids go totally crazy for it, especially boys. You could spend a whole class on this one. He jumped over the railing, he jumped sown the stairs, that kind of thing.

This is always a great clip for topics related to cultural understanding or travel.

This clip was used as an introduction to draw the students attention for a lesson on the environment and concerns related to environmental conservation. (though dumbed down a bit)

You can have lower levels list all of the objects that they see...the students or groups with the most items receive points or a piece of candy.

Silent/Short films are great for developing a descriptive vocabulary...have the students describe images, items, places, colors, people, etc., and re-create the story through those objects that they see.

This is actually a series of videos, around 6 or 7. I use this for my boys classes. I show one episode at the end of each class which can sometimes be useful in controlling behavior. They have to see what happens next.

I have my students watch this video and try to interpret what this clip is talking about... Or I'll have my advance classes write me a story to go along with this clip. Short clips are a great platform for re-creating stories or creative writing assignments.

I showed this 'Bad Table Manners' video to my grade 1's and 2's and they all loved it. Some classes liked it so much that they asked me to play it again and they played it during the break time.

I used it to teach the past tense ( the fat man burped, the older man blew his nose at the table, etc. ) and the form, 'you should not...'

The best videos in my experience at middle and elementary schools seem to be the ones with the least dialogue. This is important because all levels can appreciate them and stay interested. This is also great because you can then (with ppt, worksheets, dialogue, and activities) cater the video to fit the exact needs of your chapter or context of your lesson plan.

~Anything Mr. Bean is successful (and frequently asked for!)

~Anything "Backkom Bear" aka "Bernard Bear"

There are SO MANY clips you can find for these series. They have little to no dialogue and so are varied and perfect for ESL classes.

The best videos WITH dialogue are short and have physical humor.

Any of these video series are good:

Gogo's adventures with English 1-37 covers a lot of good topics

Learn english with pumpkin.com also covers good topics and is often a little funny

Real English, a bit 90's but good for grade 5 or 6 sometimes to start a lesson or use for activities.

Wearebusybeavers - good songs

ICNELLY on youtube has songs that cover grade 5 and 6

Sesame street

William teacher (willsaim) on youtube does dances for the grade 5&6 songs too which is fun!

My students loved "Pancakes for your face". I used it for lower levels to practice the imperative: 'crack the eggs' 'pour the milk' etc and for the higher levels to actually write and speak the narration. I have the whole lesson for it on powerpoint and will upload it when I get time.

I have more videos I have used and will search them out and share them - it's been great looking through those others have linked.

What Happens Next??

I teach at an all boys high school and this was extremely popular. I did a lesson on verbs and and adverbs then got the students to watch a series of clips where they had to guess "what happens next". All the potential answers/responses included verbs and adverbs embedded within.

After each clip (there are 10) read the potential answers aloud and get the students to pick A, B or C. Go over the verbs and adverbs in the process.

One of my colleagues actually took the initiative to pop on the famous Youtube dancing guy. No English in there, but scenes from all over the world. Fascinating stuff.

As for the Gogos, there's an index of those on the elem. boards.

Weebl's Stuff has a few good ones BUT it is primarily a parody of Children's videos so most are NSFW. Use Youtube (where some are even edited clean), not the website and check them beforehand. The animals ones are generally clean.

Kids always love Mr. Bean, in case you haven't tried that yet. It's mostly silent, so it's great for English learners.

I used this clip in my advice class for my middle school classes. All students loved it, regardless of grade or level. Students are told to look for Mr. Bean's problems and give him advice.

I only play the first half, i.e. the magic show. For the lower-level students, I first write "Mr. Bean lost his __________(watch). He should _______(find) it" on the board. I play the movie, pausing at about 1:19 to elicit the missing words. I resume the video, telling students to watch for another thing Mr. Bean loses, and stop it just before 3:00 when Mr. Bean's girlfriend has left. By this point they will usually volunteer "He lost his girlfriend," and I ask them what their advice for him is. Higher-level students can usually identify the problems and offer advice without all the structure.

You can use the second half of the video as a carrot for good behaviour during the rest of the lesson.

Nice video but do you not have an issue with the song playing in the third clip (the one with the bike race) which sounds to me like it says "go, go, f*cking go"

To be quite honest, I never noticed. I'm still not entirely sure if that is what the singer is saying. Thanks for pointing it out though. Usually by that point, the boys were making so much noise that you could not even hear the music. If you think that's what the lyric is, turn off the volume for clip #3. ::)

Ten minutes seems a bit much. I like to start class with a video (related to the lesson), and if I can't find one, I make one with xtranormal.com. It used to be free, but now it is a mostly pay site. You can still make free videos, but are limited in characters. If you write to them and tell them you are making videos for ed. purposes, they may give you credit. I've had a lot of success with the video "people are awesome":

And its counterpart, people are NOT awesome.

I also did a confidence-boosting exercise using a couple Super Mario World clips. I show this one first:

Which is just a person blazing through a particularly hard stage. I ask my students how long they think it takes to get that good at the game and after eliciting the answers I show this video:

Essentially, the player is trying to play a modified version of SMW for the first time and failing miserably, but succeeds in the end. I equate it to learning English: it takes a lot of effort and a LOT of mistake-making to become truly good at English (well, to become good at ANYTHING takes a lot of practice, but I narrow the scope for the sake of the lesson). Therefore, it's better to try and mess up than to avoid trying. Plus, there are a couple hilarious parts in the video, so that's a bonus.

To be honest, I generally use them as filler at the end of a long class or at the start of a class that looks bored. Since it fires them up I take the opportunity to make them describe their favorite parts in English.
