Lesson 9: Korean Rice Cakes

Hi All

Thanks for all the stuff I have stolen over the months, it has all been of great use!

This lesson is based on the premise that chpt 9 uses the words seasonal and traditional. It doesn't have a whole heap of english value, more cultural; the students enjoyed the pictures of foods from around the world.

Basically its a 'guess which country this food comes from.' The students are given a hint by means of being told which continent the country comes from. (I review very briefly continents before starting the quiz)

They are each given a worksheet with a map of the world and a table with the 11 foods they are going to be looking at and space to write their answers.

Part one Review of last weeks key sentences - listen and repeat

Part two Explain the meaning of seasonal & traditional

Part three Students guess which country the food comes from. Check the students understanding of what a continent is. Go through each slide with an explaination of what the food is made of. First 11 slides just have the name and the continent, the next 11 slides have the answer.

I ended up using this for grades 1 thru 3 with modifications to part one. The timing pretty much was spot on 45 mins.

Hi

This was my effort for open class last week on chpt 9, hopefully it helps someone out.

It was taught to a class of 33 split into groups of 4 (and one group of 5!)

Part 1 Introduce todays lesson, review last weeks vocab - 5 mins

Part 2 Key sentences. Give out key sentence worksheet. Would you like some... Listen and repeat each of the three slides x3 Repeat for 'how do you like it' x3 (14 mins)

Part 3 Bingo - explain bingo game. go though vocab. Students randomly fill in their bingo card. Rock sissors paper to decide who goes first. Then round robin in the group, only crossing off their sheet when they are being asked the question and they have that written on their bingo card. first student to cross off all 9 boxes is the winner.  (21 mins)

Part 4 Review and hand out homework sheet (5 mins)

You have Afghanistan's food Qaubili Pilau as a "South America" food. Should probably say "Asia" or "Middle East"

This isn't the most exciting lesson but I made a worksheet for the students to review some of the material and have them learn some new vocabulary that can be used when talking about food.

I can't stand rice cakes; not sure I can do a whole lesson about them [and food for that matter, if it's before lunch] but thanks for the example.  I'll probably use it soon despite my hesitations.

For this lesson, I first make a point to differentiate between "Would you like..." (Do you want some...) and "How do you like..." (what is your opinion).  I make sure that they understand that 'yes/no' is not an answer for "How would you like..."  Also, it is important to emphasize "Would you like A/SOME _____" because many Korean students forget this.  Then, I let them tell me how to answer "How do you like..." because it is very basic and most of them can answer it on their own.  Then go through the slideshow and interchange the two questions to keep them listening.  This is also a great practice on singular/plural/countable/non-countable nouns "How do you like pasta" vs. "would you like SOME pasta?"  At the end, pair the students up and have them present for points.

For this lesson, I had the students make their own restaurant and menu with foods that they like to eat. Under each food should have a short description of what the food is, or how it is prepared.

the game i play with this is something i modified from a "what do you like about" lesson i found on waygook earlier.
its now a "how do you like music" lesson. focusing on the how do you like phrase we will watch 30 second clips from different genres of music. each student will have a chart to fill out to aid them in conversation after the game.

*some of the music clips may have some pg13 language but i've done this lesson before and the artists are singing so fast that the kids don't even notice. i've also added some songs just because i want to listen to them^^ feel free to pick your own genres and songs - do what you want with it!!

I made a PPT of food from around the world. Very simple, but got all my students attention on me the entire time. After I asked the students for their personal opinion on each food as well + key expressions from the lesson. Good luck!

Hey thanks for the help.  I made a whole lesson by combining the key phrases and then I did the fun bit at the end where they had to guess where the food is from.  If I had too much time I also asked what they thought the food tasted like. and would they like it etc.

natale_laplante i really like your game. I opened the PPT earlier and could look at it but now each time I try to open it it says I cannot because 'it is in use by another user' ??

Here's a game I made for this lesson. It covers "Would you like some...?" and "How do you like...?" 

First I secretly show one team where the monkey is hidden. Then all together they ask another team "would you like some...." The other team decides, and I award or take away bananas. 
Then the first team asks, "How do you like...", and the team makes their choice and is either awarded bananas or deducted bananas.

(When I copied and pasted the animated monkeys and bananas to each slide, their copies were frozen. If you find a new image and insert it individually into each slide, they remain animated.)

This game requires whiteboards and markers for every team. Have one team come to the front of the class. The other teams ask them the question, "How do you like...?" (give points to the team that can say the question first.) Then the team standing writes their opinion on their whiteboard: We like.... It is very....  The other teams write down what they think the standing team's opinion is: They like... It is very... I ask everyone to hold up their boards, then the standing team says their answers aloud.

Change my face on the english robot to your own. The slide with Lee Myung Bak and the slide after that, are to explain that they must come up with a new opinion each round.
