Adapted Zombie Survival Activity with a new Game
« on: September 29, 2011, 05:06:04 PM »
Downloaded the Zombie material from another thread a while ago, but only recently made some changes and used in my middle school classes.  Can't seem to find the original thread even with the search function.  Anyway, I forget who the orginal author was, but HUGE thanks for making the lesson.  If someone knows who he/she is please let me know.

The first lesson is pretty much identical to the orginal, with students (in groups of 4 max) choosing 16 items they would put in a Zombie survival kit.  Started out with an intro video and then talked about zombies, what they eat, how to kill them etc.  I did make one change to the handout and that was to have the students choose 4 of their items and write why they chose them.  I would collect the papers from the groups at the end of class otherwise you'll probably never see them again and won't be able to do the second part.

The second part of the lesson is the game I made with the help of a few slides from the survial plan part of the original lesson.  Students choose roles for each member of their team and they will get/lose points based of the items they chose as the game progresses.  It's similar to the deserted island activity someone else made.  There is a handout with the powerpoint game and students write their name next to their role and add up points along the way.

My students really enjoyed it so hope it works well for you if you try it.  Feel free to make any changes and repost it if you like.

There's another excellent zombie lesson here, featuring the classic 'Balloon Debate' - each person / group has to convince the class why they should get a place on the lifeboat.

Great Halloween lesson idea. I did something similar with some video clips from "Zombieland". My high-school students loved it

Just wanted to say that this is fantastic and you're a legend!
I don't think my students have ever had as much fun as they did with this lesson.

Seriously WELL DONE on this one. I loved it, and it motivated me to do the second one. I'm not sure if I'm gonna stick with the whole zombie theme, but I might just do that. Love the characters thing in the beginning, there must be a way to incorporate that in the story later. I'll get working on my idea soon.

I really like this and the K-pop music powerpoint lesson for classes that are after final tests. Instead of watching movies, these types of lesson are exciting and get the students involved. I usually like to compliment lessons with videos to try and gain their attention, introduce vocab, and add to the multimedia. This is all relevant to your students. Some videos I got from youtube include:

Shaun of the Dead. The scene depicts the group navigating through a sea of zombies while pretending to be zombies. Play from 1:30 - 2:30. How do zombies act? What do they look like? Can you act like a zombie? (note profanity before and after 1:30 - 2:30)

Resident Evil 5: Mutant zombies and a lot of action.

Scary Movie 4: Zombie fight scene. What hurts the zombies? Who can become a zombie? (check for profanities)

Plants vs. Zombies: Students love games.

Also, Day of the Dead has some great zombie scenes but it is fairly violent. As well, on waygook and youtube you can find the videos for Zombieland and the rules to prevent yourself from being eaten by a zombie which include cardio, no bathrooms, seatbelts and more.

I think I'm just going to stick with Shaun of the Dead to introduce zombies and elicit some information about how they look, move, and sound.

Great work with the lesson!

I would really like to use this lesson but I am a bit confused about how the game works. Especially without a power point.  The second part is giving me the most trouble. Where is the PPT to follow along with it?

@jksmith6  Sorry, I haven't checked this post in a little while.  Can you not download the powerpoint for the second part?  There should be a handout and powerpoint that go together (both labeled "Part 2 - ....").  If you are having trouble downloading it message me and I could email it to you or something.
