This is for Lesson 11: Let's Draw: with the real heads with cartoon bodies book.
It's a simple bomb game I found in last year's 3rd Grade book, lesson 9 - I have two pencils (counting).

This is for the Cheonjae Gyoyuk yellow book with the kids walking around a globe. It's for lesson 11 "How Old Are You?". Mods, please start a thread for this and move as I'm not too sure how to. Thanks.

Here is a simple ppt I made for the 1st period. It has review of number 6-12, plus 20. There is a small game at the end. It is really a hot/cold kind of game.

Basically, you chose one random student, put them in front of the class. On the screen behind them, that they can't see, is their age. Then the class asks "how old are you?" The student then says "I'm ___" The class says if they are right, if the number is higher or lower. Then repeat. I haven't used it yet, but I figured it would be a good way to have them all speaking and be active with very limited sentence form.

This is for the motivation, they must know the number to say the age.
Let them sing [Ten little indian boys]

GRADE 3 - Lesson 11 - How Old Is He (Yellow Book with Blue Globe)
« Reply #6 on: October 05, 2011, 12:46:54 pm »
These are the activities i will be using during unit 11.

1) - Memory Game (numbers 1-10). I made 4 sets of these flash cards and so played the game with the class split into 4 teams. There are two copies of each number in each set (so on set contains the numbers 1-10 twice = 20 cards).
All cards are placed face down on the table ... children select a card and say the key sentence 'i am ... years old (using the number for the age). They then choose another card and say the sentence. If the cards match, they keep the card and play again. If not ... the next student plays his / her turn.

The kids really enjoyed this ... a warning though ... they get loud!
Also, it is worth laminating these / sticking them on colored paper squares (or the students can see through the card making the game pointless).

2) How old is he? - Guessing game.

Students are split into two teams ... they have to guess the age of the character on the screen .... teacher will tell them higher / lower as clues ... the team who guesses correctly wins the points.

3) Bingo - http://www.bingoport.co.uk/bingo-caller/
I used a website to make bingo cards (students work in pairs) and the above site as a bingo caller. students say the key phrase for each number shown.

4) Grade 5 - Unit 11 - How Old Are You - How many game

When you press the hint button ... images flash up .. students must work out how many there are ... then use that number to make the key sentences ... hit the show button to display the picture static on the slide.

hope these ideas help ... feel free to modify as you see fit ... any feedback greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm going to play bingo as the game at the end, but I've decided to make it more ss orientated. SS write a number in the middle square and then walk around the classroom and ask others 'how old are you?'. They then write the number in any vacant box.

Next, I will play some music and the ss will pass a ball. When the music stops, the class will say 'how old are you?' and the ss with the ball must say a number from their grid. Whoever has the same number can cross it off their list. First person to have a line will shout bingo.

Hope this is useful!  :)

GRADE 3 - Lesson 11 - How Old Is He (Yellow Book with Blue Globe)
« Reply #8 on: October 06, 2011, 12:26:27 pm »
A few things i made / used for unit 11 - How Old Is He?

1) Grade 5 - Unit 11 - How Old Is He - Guessing Game

Students split into two teams, they must guess how old the character is on the slide. The teacher gives 'higher' 'lower' clues to guide the students to the correct answer.
- this is good for higher numbers

2) Memory Game

- I made 4 sets of the flash cards (stick them on colored paper {so the students can not see through the cards} and laminate them {so they do not get destroyed in the first class})

Students are split into four teams, cards are turned upside down on the table, the children have to find matching pairs. each time they turn a card over they must say the key phrase 'I am .... years old.

3) Grade 5 - Unit 11 - How Old Are You - How many game

Hit the hint button to flash up an image ... children have to guess how many items there are in the picture ... then use that number to make the sentence (I am ... years old).

Hope these help some people out,
feel free to modify.

Any feedback / suggestions would be greatly received.

Thanks.

Patrick

In the 4th period for this lesson the teacher's guide suggests reviewing the alphabet.  My co-teacher asked that we cover this in our class.  The students found repeating letters written on the board a bit boring, but loved reading along with this video (They Might Be Giants - Letter Shapes:)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8JzH0Jq_gw

I know it's not great for stroke order, but I'm honestly more concerned with having all my third grade students recognize the letters of the alphabet.

We also traced the letters in the air as we read.

Hope somebody finds this useful.

Here's a simple OMOK I made. We taught up until #13. Students simply have to ask their partner "How old are you?" and the partner has to answer in the location they want to place their X or O. Five in a row wins.

This is a game I played for the writing period. Each teams needs a white board and marker (make sure they change writers after each slide). They solve the slide write it down and the first team to raise their board gets a point (I chose the first 2 teams to keep them interested). The last slide is worth 3 points. Hope you find this useful, my kids loved it!!

Here is another video clip that can be used as motivation, I haven't used it yet, but it looks more entertaining than most counting songs on Youtube!

  Play 3-6-9 game.

Each student will say a number from 1 in order.
But whenever the numbers have 3, 6, 9, they should clap without saying it.
  of course, 33/36/39.... clap twice.

  Simple but students like it.
