This is a really great ppt I used to continue working with my students on how to express their opinions. We had the Introductory lesson last week and are following it up with more practice and the introduction of "Agree and Disagree". In the first lesson, I helped my students understand the two parts in expressing their opinions. First, to say if what they think (ie. Harry Potter movies are the best/Twilight movies are the best). Second, to explain why (ie. ...because they are about magic and I love magic./ ... because Edward is really cute!)
In this ppt, we begin with a Review (I play music as my students pass around my stuffed Elephant doll) and ask students to tell me their opinions about different things.
Next, I introduce how to Agree or Disagree. It is a pretty easy concept so I don't spend too much time with it except to have the students write down in their books the different ways they can say Agree or Disagree. Having them write down their own list is very important because they must use them in the follow up Practice/Game!
Now it's the fun part! I hand out worksheets to the students that ask them what they think about each of the commercials I will show. It is a comparing exercise where the students must say what they think of each one and then give me an opinion on which they think is funnier or better. After each set of commercials, the students get up from their seats and move to opposite sides of the room. In the first set, the first student says what they think and the next students follow up by saying "I agree!" HOWEVER, the rule is each student cannot repeat the same "I agree" statement as the previous student! The side of the room that does it the fastest wins stickers. If there is an uneven amount, I ask the longer side to have the extra students sit out. But they cannot sit out next time!!
In the second round, after they have made their choices and are on the opposite sides of the room, they must alternate students on each side and say they disagree. For example First student on side 1 (1S1) will say, "I think commercial #1 is funnier." First student on side 2 (1S2) says "I disagree! Commercial 2 was funnier!" THEN (2S1) says, "I disagree with you! Commercial 1 was funnier!" and so on. It can be complicated at first, but believe me, the kids really catch on!
I hope this ppt gives you all some good ideas! And just a reminder... I always begin and end telling my students that Opinions are to be respected by everyone!
Take Care and Good Luck!
