Grade 2 Chapter 11: Please, Don't Dog Ear
« on: November 02, 2010, 03:29:19 PM »
If anyone else teaches from this book, do you have any ideas on approaches or activities for this chapter? Key phrases include, "I'm so full," "I'm so nervous," "Give me five," "it's a small world," "long time , no see," and who can forget this classic, "sleep tight." There's a myriad of others that seemingly have absolutely nothing in common. Any suggestions? Usually I do something that's related to the chapter, but there's no discernible theme.

I think there are really two themes in this lesson. 'how are you?' and Idioms.

I'm just going to use idioms as the basis of my lesson as there are lots of ways you can make them pretty interesting and fun for the kids, plus, there are so many.

I'm going to skip the whole 'how are you?' bit. I think my kids already know their way around feeling and it's boring and has no real connection to idioms.

If you search it on here you'll find a fair bit of information on idioms. I did a bit of stuff on it during my summer camp with first grade and had them drawing the literal meaning of each idiom and what the thought that it might actually mean and they really enjoyed it.

This textbook is terrible though. I dread looking at each new lesson for fear of what I might have to teach.

Hope this helps.

Dan.

I have to do 2 lessons per chapter, so I split them into 1 lesson on emotions/feelings and the 2nd one will be over idioms.
For the emotions lesson, I used the attached powerpoint and bomb game. Then I showed them "Mr. Bean goes to the swimming pool"  where they had to identify and say how Mr. Bean was feeling at different points in the clip.
I used the above on low/middle-low students. Higher levels would powerhouse through the ppt and the bomb game, so feel free to modify to what you need.

I'm making a prezi for this one so I'll post it as soon as I get done with it.  Thanks for the other PPT.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I don't have class until 3rd period. I'm going to try to put something together. I'll upload it as soon as I'm finished.

I am in the process of making a PPT of Idioms. Which is very useful in conversational English! At the end of the slides and explanations I am going to split the class into groups of about 4 or 5 and have them create their own dialogue and present it to the class when they are done. I'll probably have them use at least 2 idioms, the more the better.

This lesson is definitely rough. I taught it today to my high level students. I was thinking of making a power point presentation of pictures, kind of like pictionary, where they need to string together the idiom. My lower levels students - i have no idea. I was thinking of having them make comics, but that takes all but 2 seconds. any further ideas would be awesome.
thanks!

Hey teachers,
here is an idiom PPT i made for this lesson. I have the students read the dialogue for eah idiom then have them guess what the idiom means. At the end of the slides I handed them a sheet with all the idioms that are on the slide and had them create a dialogue in groups of four. They had to use at least two idioms. You can adjust this to your own class, my school's english level is really high so creating a dialogue with the idioms wasnt too hard but still challenging enough. Hope this helps!

Grade 2 Chapter 11 (please don't dog ear)
« Reply #10 on: November 09, 2010, 11:26:44 AM »
Just finished this lesson. The first portion deals with some phrasal verbs for emotions. For the second part, I borrowed some things about superstition from another user. There's also a bomb game that is incorporated in the powerpoint. There's two pages of questions. The first page is review of this particular lesson, and the second page is a review of some of the material covered previously. I believe one of the questions has my name in it as well. Let me know if you see any mistakes--I just finished this.

Okay, I know it's been a long time in coming but here is the prezi that I'd put together a couple of weeks ago. http://prezi.com/_jj93w4uz82i/please-dont-dog-ear/

Next up is a review for lessons 10 & 11. It's got fill in the blanks, fix up the mix up, matching, writing a response, put the sentences in the right order, and a dialogue fill in and practice.

There are also some other resources I've found to go along with this topic attached to the word document and also standing alone.  Hope you all enjoy.

Here's my PPT on idioms for this lesson. You can reference Michael Swan's Practical English Usage for some of what he says about prepositional verbs and conventional word combos. The PPT is obviously customized for my routine, you might need to delete some slides.

Hi klorptar,
I know you wrote this a year ago but I spotted a mistake. There is no picture in the 'What is this?'- Candy bar slide.  Maybe you'd like to know. : )

Thanks to alex16's suggestion, here is a PPT I put together using most of the key idioms from the textbook.  Students are encouraged to first look at the literal pictures of the idiom to try to guess each one.  I made a worksheet that goes along with the PPT where students can just follow along and draw lines to connect each idiom to the appropriate meaning.  A very primitive PPT, but hopefully it helps!!

How are You?

As you go through the vocab, write all the words on the board. For the activity, the class is divided into two teams and one person from each team goes up. Show the slide and they race to the board to circle an approriate emotion. Another activity I tried is printing out all the faces. A student will come up and mime the emotion and whoever guesses gets a point for the team. Also, I suggest moving the puzle to the end. If you give it to them in the middle, they'll want to finish and won't pay attention for the rest of the class.

i used Sheila's great Prezi and modified it a bit. i used most of her idioms but also added a few of my own.

http://prezi.com/-xg3iclsfpbg/grade-2-lesson-11-please-dont-dog-ear/

i'm not going to do much from the book this time since exercise E is half in Korean.
i focusing mainly on idioms and their meanings.
we will also do a little of exercise D from the book - but that dialogue is so easy for 2nd grade that we'll play the relay type game with pictures and emotions that was mentioned above

~ enjoy^^
~ enjoy ~ *^^* ~
