Station Teaching - have you tried it?
« on: October 13, 2011, 02:53:33 pm »
In station teaching, the students are split into three groups. The groups go to different stations and switch every 10 minutes. The stations are as follows:
1) listening and speaking (here the GET introduces a speaking activity and monitors the students while they carry out the activity)
2) reading and writing (the Korean co monitors students as they complete a worksheet or workbook activity)
3) self study (dictation or other worksheets like word matching, crosswords, etc.)

I'm about to try station teaching for the first time next week. I've created materials for each station and have briefed my co-teachers on their roles and reserved the English Cafe so we will have plenty of room. I'm wondering if anyone has tried this before and had great success. If you want to see an example of the station teaching lesson plan, see the attachment.

I have yet to try stations in Korea. In the USA, I used stations in my classroom. I would preview all the stations at first and then have them get into their groups. Stations also allow you to differentiate. You could split them into groups based on level and either challenge them or meet them at their level. If you have any questions etc. I'd be willing to give you more information.

Hey that's a good idea. Did you also have a large classroom? At the moment I can only use the large English Cafe with my first graders, as the room is occupied during my other classes. If it goes well next week I want to try station teaching with my other grades, too, but I'm worried we won't have enough space in the regular classrooms. Did you station teach for every lesson?

This sounds really interesting, I've never tried this, but would like to as I'm currently doing some coursework for a Diploma in TESOL where I'm trying to use different methodologies.  I'd b interested in hearing how it went, and also getting a copy of the activities, ppt, if that's ok?!

This is a great idea!  It always bothers me that when I'm listening to students speak most of the class just sit around speaking to each other in Korean. Will run this by my head teacher, I think it'll work well!
Thanks for the tip!

Here are some of the materials mentioned in my lesson plan. I can't upload the Shadows and Jobs Quiz WS because I got them out of a book.

Flyswatter! is a listening game. The students must "swat" the correct word with their pointer finger before their partner does (play in groups of 2, 3 if you must). They can keep score in the score box provided in the corner of the paper. You can either show photos, as I did in the ppt, or read the clues aloud. I must give credit for this activity to Mr. A who gave a lecture at the Busan Education Training Institute. Thanks Mr. A!

After reading about station teaching I decided to give it a try.

Here's a station lesson I've made for middle school grade 3 (but I've also made easier versions for grades 1&2) some of the worksheets are from bogglesworld, I've changed some of them (once printed) and got my co-teacher to write the instructions and some more difficult words in Korean.

Station 1 = with me = debates city vs country etc.
Station 2 = Worksheets - talking about cities, city vocab and pros an cons of city and country.
Station 3 = with co = discussion cards.
Station 4 = design a poster advertising Busan.

I just tried the above lesson with great success, it made a really nice change to have a different format in the classroom and I was surprised that students even completed the tasks at stations where there wasn't a teacher!
so thanks to lisselou and djayanty for the original idea, I'll definitely be doing this again.
