Lesson: Pwopa Nawty Problems and Advice
« on: October 14, 2011, 12:31:07 PM »
Here is a lesson on problems and advice, which is in sync with my 2nd graders books next week.

Intro is powerpoint, showing different problems, which should be elicited from students. This is followed by pictures of people who have problems (the teachers 'friends). The students are asked to give advice, prompted by 'he should......'

There is a handout for the development.

The main part of the lesson is when the students are given pictures of animals. The students have to come up with a name for the animals and then create a problem for them. When this is done, they swap with another group who write a solution to the animal's problem. These can be presented at the end of class.

Any feedback is welcome.
Thanks!

I like the idea of using interesting or silly animals to give advice to, instead of other students (which might make them shy), so I'm going to borrow this idea for my two classes who are extra-far along in their book. I'm going to use it for the special lesson 'What Are Your Worries? : The Worry Tree" at the end of the Haas 2014 Middle School English 2 book.

Attached are the cards I made for animals - I would like students to do one animal each, and since I have about 26-30 students in each class, I've made a document with 36 animals (I'm going to let students choose their animals in a certain order, based on who's answered the questions up to that point, or maybe the winners of some other task I'll set. This way they won't be "stuck" with a certain animal they don't have ideas for).

When you print, it should be double-sided. Students survey their classmates and write their suggestions on the back. I plan to make them share the best advice at the end of class.
