(천재교육 Cheonjae) Grade 3, Lesson 13 - "How Old Are You?"
« on: October 18, 2011, 03:15:32 pm »
Here's a sonic(you need the komikax file for scores) game and a guess the age game for this lesson.

A video about some red dragon crashing a birthday party, there's counting and target language.
There's a counting video, the guy in it has a bit of a weird head on him but the song is decent.

simple idea:

i posted different ages around the classroom. one student is "it." other students pick one of the numbers and stand by it. students say "how old are you?" "it" says he is 10 years old. those students are eliminated and sit down. last man standing. it's halloween so i will let them trick or treat after. i dont have a source of rocks, so no tricks  :'(

I've attached a modified "Blazing Pens" game that my co-teacher had used previously. Whiteboards make it a lot easier (and seem like more of a real relay, they get a real kick out of writing at the last second ) and interactive.

While they aren't listed in the PPT, and you're likely want to insert relevant pictures for your own staff, the rules are simple: for photos, teams guess the age of the person, and the closest team to the number wins the points (or does rock, scissors, paper in case of a tie). For the translate questions, its just a matter of writing things down. My co-teacher and I have really experienced benefits from weaving Korean translation into lessons, whether its E-K or K-E. Building bilingualism is fun.

I also changed the animations a bit so you can click, make the students ask "How Old Are You?" aloud, and then have time to guess and write. This is also the PPT I'll be using for a demo class, so if you find any mistakes, shoot me a PM :)

The numbers 1-20 then 1 + 2 = 3 and 4 - 3 = 1... sigh
I wish this book would be a little more difficult.

Here is a ppt that has large numbers and math.  Actually it might be too much math, but the kids seemed to like it.  Also, Lee Myung Bak is 69 years old, not 70, his birthday is in December.  I doubt anyone besides you will know that.  The 1335 year old temple is in my neighborhood, maybe switch that to something in your area.

His Korean age is 71. I've used Korean ages for all of the Korean people. (I've fixed it from 72 to 71 after I posted it).

Also, to go with the how old are you? song and handout, I made a short PPT to check the answers.

I thought of a few other simple ideas/games for this lesson.
One is the game 4 Corners. Have the students stand corner of how old they are.  Instruct students if they are 8 years old go to corner 1, if they are 9 years old go to corner 2, if they are older than 9 go to corner 3, and if they are younger than 8 go to corner 4. Then I usually have them ask and answer a simple question with a partner from their corner. For example, what is your favorite/lucky number?

The next would be a number bingo, have the students draw a tic tac toe board or larger on a piece of paper then have them fill in numbers 1-15 .

Finally there is a video on real-english.com which an interviewer asks several people how old they are. I plan on showing this and pausing after every response and have the class answer how old was _____ . The link is http://real-english.com/reo/8-c/unit8c.html. There is also an exercise which plays on clip and you match the number to what the person said.

Attached new materials. Updated "How Old Are You?" guessing game (Blazing Pens template) and a counting PPT with some cute images.

2 page Toy Story themed "how old are you" - Group game

Print it out and glue it side by side. Get the kids in groups of 3-5. Have them roll the dice and say the age that they land on. Ex "I'm 5 years old"

Skull = go back to start

Join the Dots.
Student 1 reads the numbers from the secret answer key.
Student 2 listens and joins the dots on the picture.
Then swap roles for picture B.

it's really easy to edit too. go nuts.
