~ The World Quiz ~
« on: November 03, 2010, 01:46:45 pm »
This lesson primarily focuses on drilling countries, continents and oceans.
However, it does require some general knowledge and guess work on behalf of the learners in the PPT quiz.

There is probably more material here than necessary.
It all depends on the level of your learners and how snappy you teach.

Please use or omit as you feel.
Feedback is most welcome.

Greetings
Continents & Oceans
Worksheet
The World Quiz
Quick Countries List

Please find all teacher directions in the attached Lesson Plan.

- In the PPT, to return from a question to the main map click on the hyperlinked globe (top left)
Also, to move from the practice review to the actual quiz click one of the red 'are you ready's in the corners.
- I cannot guarantee how the 'hearts, guns & bombs scenario will play out as I have not tried it yet.
Somebody else posted the idea on Waygook.org and I thought it sounded great.
It's up to you to tweak the amount of lives, etc.
- The Worksheet is two pages. Double sided print if you can.

Also, I use Blue Highway Linocut Font: http://www.getfreefonts.info/free_font.bluehighwaylinocut.html
To install it, unzip the file and drag the font icon into your fonts folder (C:/windows/fonts)

I hope this helps!
Good luck 8)

PPT has been edited & re-uploaded. Corrections: African Culture / Sound Effects / Fonts Embedded
Thank you, GreenFloyd, for adding the sounds  :D
Thank you, Gilly, for correcting the information about South Africa  ;)

Looks great, really professional.

Recently, I've been obsessed with a geography game on facebook called 'geo challenge'. You'll find it if you do a search for exactly that. I'm gonna let my small-sized evening class play as well as doing this, I think it'll fit perfectly.

Wow I love it. I think I'm going to use the template for a Friday review of my travel week lesson and change the questions around. Awesome job :). I think the only thing that might make it a little more engaging is a sound after clicking the correct box. Kids dig the anticipation to hear that bomb sound if they get bombed or the sound that they got the answer correct. It really made the Mario Bomb lesson that Jennifer Yong posted a while back ago such a hit.

Yeah I'll try to add sounds for you and re-upload it  8). It depends a little bit on how my time goes today though. It might take until tomorrow. I'm very busy :(

Actually I just did it right now and it didn't take nearly as long as I thought. I just used the stock PPT cash register and bomb sounds to add to the objects. Much easier than I thought it would be!

Here it is with sounds now.

Thanks GreenFloyd, you've done an excellent job!
I wish I knew how to do it on this Korean PPT.

I may figure it out on an English one and then try to match it in Korean  ???

If you don't mind, I'll replace the old file with this one to make sure people see it and download it.

Thanks again for the effort and time!

This looks like a great lesson, but I am a little confused.  How do you know which is the right answer, as all the sounds seem to be the same?  Also, where are the answers for reference?  Thank you so much - I would like to try it.

- Hey Carlita. The correct answer would be the one with the heart or gun symbol.
A bomb symbol, and explosion sound, would be the wrong answer.

If you still need the questions and answers written up let me know and I guess I can find time to do that...

I'm very new to PowerPoint, though, and I just had a few questions:
A lot of the words and such in the ppt seem squished together or too big for the screen - is this how it looks to everyone, or am I just doing something wrong on my end?

For example, almost all of the answers have the words hyphenated and over two lines, and lots of words appear off-screen for me.

Hey Cole, this is the unfortunate thing about PPT.
No, it should look like this at all. However, if you simply do this:

"Also, I use Blue Highway Linocut Font: http://www.getfreefonts.info/free_font.bluehighwaylinocut.html
To install it, unzip the file and drag the font icon into your fonts folder (C:/windows/fonts)"

It should make it look as I intended it.
I believe, because your font will be different then the sizes and positioning of everything would be skewed.
It's unfortunate.

I do wish there was some kind of PPT PDF maker or something, some way of stamping a PPT as it was intended. Anyone every heard of such a thing?
* actually, I just found one: prep4pdf - the free download worked but I can't make it interactive enough
to be worthwhile. Know of a better one?

Hi this lesson is awesome and I appreciate all of the effort you put in but I have a few corrections to the South Africa part of your PPT, the question is "What is the capital of South Africa?" and SA is unique in that we have 3 capitals:
Pretoria (executive), Bloemfontein (judicial) and Cape Town (legislative) which means two of your answers are correct (Pretoria and Bloemfontein) so you might want to change this question. Also the picture on the 'South Africa' page for the practice round is misleading because it is the outline of Africa with the SA flag across it; and as most people think Africa is a country not a continent and I fear you are perpetuating this misperception making it look like SA is the whole of Africa, As a South African these are the daily things I have to try to correct in the perceptions of Korean kids and teachers alike so I hope you understand my concern and thanks again for the lesson.

@ Gilly - Being from the UK I completely understand where you're coming from.
No English is not from Canada/U.S.A. And no, neither Washington nor Chicago are the capital of England.

Regarding the capitals, this is a little annoying for me. During the world cup I taught my students that there
were 3 capitals of South Africa, as you have mentioned. However, unsure of myself afterwards I spoke to
some South African friends who told me that officially there was only one. So I changed it.
On further review, I will now change it again.  :P

I also understand how the picture of the continent Africa with the South African flag is misleading and will change it right away.
(Although with Brazil as a football and England as a pair of underwear, I wasn't striving for accuracy.)
However, I hope you understand that the rest of the PPT makes it very clear as to where South Africa is.

I will attach the edit to my first post.
Thanks for your feedback.

Thanks for the changes, glad you understand what its like to be non-North American, ya the three capitals thing is confusing, I blame our government for making life so complicated. Most sources still identify us as having 3 capitals but the most recognised one is usually Pretoria so I mostly just tell people that its the capital if they ask (its just easier) but the problem was that Bloemfontein was one of the answers in the quiz which is a possibility (because its one of the 3) so your change to East London is perfect!! Have a great day and keep making awesome lessons  ;D

No problem at all. I appreciate you taking the time to correct me.
I hope the lesson works well for everyone.

I just ran it today. Not enough time for the very last activity.
The PPT went down a treat though, as did the worksheet.

I meant to update how this went. I used your game as a template and put in all my own questions from the world/travel lessons that I taught. It was a huge hit! My middle school boys totally loved it. Thanks for making it :).

What a huge hit with both students and co-teachers! Although I allowed the students to debate the answers in Korean within their groups, a properly structured English answer was expected for their teams final answer. Throw in some sort of treat for the winning team.... you'll have a blast!

Thanks for the brilliant lesson plan!
