There are a couple of Middle School Grade 2 text books with chapters about Global Warming - both my main school and one of my rural schools have a chapter in their different text books about this. So i had to create a lesson.
Here is what i did:
Ask the students what Global warming means - split into global and warming if necessary. i explain increase in temperature by eliciting their meanings.
i then get ideas from the students about what people have done to destroy the earth. then i go through some pictures i chose of how this happened. you will probably need some help in translating from your co-teachers, as often they know the meanings, they just don't have the vocab to explain. i have drawn lots on the board (like hole in the ozone layer etc).
then the students do a matching game in groups and we go through the answers. i have asked them why things are bad like ice melting, what would happen if a tidal wave hit our town, what disappearing means (i demonstrate by drawing my own island and showing sea levels rising every ten years), what are the polar bears losing their homes, how forest fires start (often they say smoking, so i agree and say yes and BBQs too but also natural ways like too much heat from the increase in temperature). I get them to explain where polar ice comes from and tell them north and south pole. i also explain melting and have introduce solid changes into liquid.
then i get them into groups and ask them for ideas on how to help the earth. then the groups either present their ideas or you can ask for one or two ideas from each group and write on the board. i then show pictures of my ideas. the picture with the centrally plumbed heater may needed explaining - they didn't know what it was.
on the matching card game, i added ozone layer as a last minute thing so you only need to print this set once as there are 8 picture cards and 8 word cards. i usually have classes of around 30 students, so can usually do groups of 4 students.
