November 11th...that holiday without the cookies
« on: November 05, 2010, 02:58:38 PM »
Hey guys,
I'm working on a Remembrance Day lesson (it's Canada's version of Veteran's day, to put it simply). I'll post up what I come up with Sunday night but welcome any ideas as I make it. I think I'm going to start with the obvious and ask them what day Nov.11 is, and get them talking about pepero, talk about that day and it's history. Than explain about the significance of Nov.11 in Canada etc. May have an overall peace related activity in the end. Still in the works, but again, welcome any suggestions. Cheers

ah, sorry, I should have qualified that. I was pretty sure it was more of a commonwealth holiday but I was just in a rush to post before my last class and couldn't check. I planned to check before creating my actual powerpoint, fear not!

From ESL Library (http://www.esl-library.com), check it out it's great for afterschool classes. Might be worth a subscription. Got my school to pay for it.

Anyways its a little bit difficult, but you can modify it for your classes.

I tried doing this with my students last year. It was for a high level class. We also made some poppies from paper. We also listened to the "last Post" The kids were sort of bored but made sure that I didn't drag it out too much.

I would leave much of the pepero stuff to the end. It is just because if you want them to focus on the marterial, you should mention the sweets or they will be constantly yipping about that until you are finished.

The ppt isn't that great but I thought that I would post it just to give people something to work with. There are a few videos in it. Feel free to improve it or scrap it.

this website has been extremely temperamental while I've been at school, so I haven't been able to post my powerpoint but wanted to share this website while I had the chance. http://waygook.org/index.php?action=post;topic=2399.0;num_replies=7 I'm doing the war and peace words cryptic style sheet on one of the pages as well as another remembrance day crossword I found online (that I had to put clues on the board for most of the questions. It's been a bit of a mission to get the kids to pay attention to my powerpoint presentation- thank goodness for pop quiz questions and mychew candies!

For elementary students. It's a cut, paste and rearranged of posted ppt's.
