(Demeta Gates) Grade 3, Lesson 9 - "It's Snowing"
« on: October 26, 2011, 12:37:58 pm »
This isn't really a lesson or a game though if you are creative it might help to make a fun game for the class.

It's a powerpoint random weather generator.

Click the blue button in the corner and a random slide will appear displaying one of 5 weather conditions, rain, wind, snow, cold and hot.

You must enable macros on your powerpoint software for this to work. You might have to set your macro security settings to low.

I made a rather advanced boardgame for this lesson, though I never got a chance to use it in my own class, maybe it will be of help to someone else.

To play the game, divide the class into groups 3-6 groups should work fine. Have each group choose their favorite color, that is the color of their ship.

Individual students take turns deciding whether the weather will be warm, cool, or crazy. Press the button on the game board that corresponds to the weather that they choose.  The student who called the weather says, "Can you help me?" If the ship has sunny weather ahead they can move forward they say, "Sure I can." If they have a different type of weather that team says, "Sorry, I can't. It's rainy" or whatever weather they have infront of them.

The first team to the end wins.

To move a boat, click on it and  it will follow your cursor. Click where you want it to stop and it will stay there.

This works best with Powerpoint 2003 and requires macros to be enabled, It doesn't work well with interactive whiteboards.

Good Luck.

Here's the powerpoints I used.. Includes a what's missing game and a pass the ball to practice 'can you help me?'. To teach the weather types we played stepping stones. Lay down pictures of the weather types in a row (or stick on board) Use 2 teams. 2 students play at a time, they start at each end taking turns to say the vocab, when they meet in the middle..... rock, paper, scissors. Winner gets to stay put. Losing team pick a new player and start at the beginning of the line. Points awarded when team makes it to end of line.

I used a hidden picture game someone else made originally that I used in the first class, and I changed the mario game to fit this chapter. It's mostly what's the weather with a picture, but it also has a few spelling questions so make sure to cover spelling first!

Reposting the Mario Game. Thank you for sharing!

I changed 'What's the weather? to 'How's the weather?"

I have never heard people use "What's the weather?"     :undecided: Doesn't make sense to me.

Here's a guessing game where the students guess what the weather is like in various cities around the world. They guess whether it is hot or cold, and how it looks ouside (sunny, cloudy, snowing, etc). I've embedded live webpages for both the city's weather and a live webcam to show the weather conditions in that city.

You will need this plug-in in order for the live webpages to work properly:

http://skp.mvps.org/liveweb.htm

I've included instructions at the end of the PPT on how to install this plug-in and how to enable macros and ActiveX so that the presentation works properly.

If you have any questions or problems, please let me know.

Hope you find it useful!

I made a matching memory game. I used a template that I found somewhere on waygook that I no longer remember. I also taught my kids 'foggy' so that's one of the weather types in here so be sure they know it or take it out. :)

Here is a worksheet with vocabulary, key sentences, listen and speak 1 & 2, Story Time, Bingo game, and a wordsearch. The vocab and key sentences also have the Korean. For homework they must write their vocab and key sentences 3 times. If they did then the next class we can play the bingo game.
Also I have made a New Words PPT. For each slide we practice saying the letter, then the sound it makes, then the new word comes up and we practice saying it. Then the Korean meaning comes up. Then a sentence that the words goes in.
Hope you find all this helpful. There are so few resources with this book.
