Learning English with K-pop songs
« on: October 27, 2011, 06:28:43 PM »
Hello all, I think it's great we can share our ideas here and many are very creative.  My lesson today centered around the use of English verbs.  First I showed a presentation of my experience at the Asian Song Festival, which they loved.  It's a good way to start out class if you want the students attention.  I showed them pictures and even some videos I took at the festival.  For the girls I showed a video of B2st and for the guys I showed G.NA.  It went over very well.  After that they all had my attention for the lesson.

I had a ppt on the various types of English verbs and I introduced an example of each.  I focused mostly on the present tense.  I started out by going over basic present tense and gave several examples.  I gave an example for using (I,you, they, we, he/she) with verbs and how they change with each form.  Then I presented a variety of verbs they may be familar with and we practiced using the prestent tense of the verb.  The two points I focused mostly on were daily or repeated actions and present progressive verbs.  I asked them qustions, like What are you doing?  What is he doing? etc.  So they learned how both points work for the present tense.  Then I broke down how the verbs change by adding ing to verbs.

The last thing we did was watch a Kpop video I provided.  I explained to them my interest in Korean music and I created a video with English translation.  I told them to count how many verbs in the song they could find.  And if they could find any in the present progressive form (ing verbs).  They loved it.  I showed it twice but the second time I paused it at certain parts of the song and broke down the lyrics and the English verbs that were being used.  It was good for them to understand both meanings in Korean and English.  They were very thankful to me for putting so much time and effort into my translation.   Most of all it was fun.  My co-teacher liked my video so much that she asked for a copy of it, lol.   I want to share it with all of you as well so here it is.

I had to convert the original video but I think it's still good quality.
Hope you enjoy,

Daniel
