Tense Game: Secret Sentences (Middle-High School)
« on: October 31, 2011, 09:58:21 am »
This game is based on present, past, and future tenses and mainly incorporates a photo guessing game.

Each arrow represents the tense (right arrow means future ie tomorrow, left is past ie, yesterday, down is present ie, today)

Students will need to be taught gender, and the verb format as follows:

ex: to play
is playing
played
will play

Have your students guess and answer, or write down on white boards in teams.

It may be too difficult for lower students. I recommend watering down for low level, or creating simpler sentences. ???

this is wonderful! it's a good way to teach them and have them remember and use "the day before yesterday / the day after tomorrow" as opposed to just repeating 'yesterday' or 'tomorrow'  ;) thanks

Thanks.

I also think it is helpful to tell the students as your explaining the days, genders, and verbs that you explain the pictures.

ex: "Every time you see the down arrow, it means today"
"If down arrow is today, what is right arrow?"  (tomorrow) etc.

When you see "man" it will first be "He" and secondly "him"
When you see "couple" it will first be "They" and secondly "them" etc.

Practice as you go along and it will make it even easier to do.

thank you for this great game. using it this week with the 3rd graders, and works well. Never sen them so interested in a tense activity.

I made a few changes for the lower level students and made a handout for them to work from.

thanks again NicKorea!!

You're welcome - I just used it last week with high school 1st grade. (previously taught middle school). It's a little too simple for higher level kids, but you can make your own to increase the difficulty.

I also recommend splitting the class into teams of 3-4 (5-6 with lower level) and giving them whiteboards to write with.

I have an updated version I will post later with bonuses and game rules.
