~ Day of the Dead ~
« on: November 10, 2010, 08:29:53 am »
This lesson is a mixture of The Balloon Debate / Sinking Ship Debate & a Zombie attack.

All material can be found attached.
The lesson structure is:

Greetings
The Zombie Story - Important PPT explaining the story...
What Might Happen - 'Character Loop' PPT & Worksheet
Team Choice - Worksheet & 'After the Boat' PPT
Comic - Worksheet

These PPTs took me a little while and do not require much clicking.
They are styled in video format (hence the size).
All fonts, sounds & music should be embedded but if you have problems let me know.
Sound is pretty integral - I suggest you turn it right up!

To save paper, print the worksheet double sided if possible...

Feedback is most welcome...  ;)
I hope these help!

Wow, this looks awesome! I need some advice from anybody...I'm thinking of doing this for my advanced middle school 2nd grade class next week, since they are done with all the text material. Do you think this is too mature for that age?

Any answers would be appreciated! Thanks.

Hey rdh2209 - I think with a little tweaking this could certainly be used for 2nd grade middle school students.
The content is a little creepy, but doesn't actually show anything too obscene.
Perhaps the image at the end of Aftertheboat.ppt should be removed? The screaming? It's up to you...

I do think the worksheet will probably need editing. The comic should work great, but I'm not even sure my students will be able to complete the worksheet.
Perhaps simplify it a little, or give them more time on it (or larger groups).
You could even reduce the amount of characters involved.

I hope this helps and the lesson works for you  :)

I have been using a simplified version of the game for my MS second graders and they love it. I basically get them to tell me who they will save and why.

To be honest, this seems  to be at the right level for second graders. They play Left 4 Dead a lot and as soon as you mention game language like "skill" and "item" they catch on pretty quick.

When they answer, I get them to use phrases like "I would save ____ because _____"
You get some pretty funny answers too.

My last class thought "Mrs. Smith" was HOT so their answer was something like "We would save Mrs. Smith because man need women and need to make people more" or something like that.

Suffice to say it can be adapted to meet their levels.

No problem at all. Glad you could use it.
Let me know how it goes!

@ Janitor - lol about the students' reaction to Mrs Smith.
I look forward to hearing to what my kids have to say about her next week.
Good thinking on the game language front. I'll switch object to item and keep that in mind in the future...

Man I swear I posted in this thread already, but for some reason it doesn't appear.

Anyway awesome job and great idea on this. One thing I don't understand is the purpose of some of the characters. Like why is having a flair gun, cell phone, money and power important? Because if everything is overrun by zombies, I don't see any use for a flair gun, cell phone or money. What was your original thinking?

I think i'm going to change a few of the characters, maybe an ex special forces guy, but he has no weapon and a scientist instead of rom zombie.

Hey BlueSoju, thanks for your comments.
I do agree, some of the characters seem rather pointless.
I was hoping the students would figure this out for themselves, however.

I think your ideas are great. Please do go ahead and change them.
Post them up here if you would.

Also, attached are more clarified and simplified worksheets.

I used it today in class and it was a good change up, been playing too many games lately. Thanks for the lifesaver. I thought it was a very good lesson. It must have been hard finding some of the pics you used in the lesson. I can only imagine as I get frustrated myself trying to find the right pics.

Here are the characters I used:

Mr. Im
-Skilled fisherman
-During the Korean war, he learned many survival skills
-He can not run

Super Ajumma
-Cannot become a zombie
-Excellent cook
-She loves young men only

Dave
-Has a lot of money nad power
-He has body odor and refuses to shower
-He can not swim

Count Kim
-He lives on the island
-He has a house and food on the island
-is a vampire

Femme Fatale
-She was in the North Korean special forces
-She has weapons
-She is a lesbian

Sniper
-Expert sniper
-Doesn't trust people
-Suffers from post traumatic syndrome

Mr. McFly
-Knows how to fly airplanes
-He eats too much food and is lazy
-He is gay and loves Korean men (lol)

Anna
-She is pretty
-She is stupid and somewhat crazy
-She is very promiscuous

Bob
-Knows how to build and make things
-Knows kickboxing
-Wants a girlfriend desperately

Mr. Yammamoto
-Scientist who knows a lot about zombies
-He experimented on humans during WW II
-He is perverted

Funny kids still pick Anna for breading purposes even though she might be crazy and promiscuous.

I think it's a great combo of the deserted island activity and of course, zombies. If anyone could help me figure out something slightly beyond my skill set of ppt I would greatly appreciate it. I'm trying to fix a typo (my kids are sharp and they nag me for any typo) and I'm trying to change the location so they don't keep reminding me that we're not in Mokpo. Unfortunately it's somehow layered into the slide and not easily accessible. Any suggestions for how to edit those layered slides?

Thanks again for the post. I've put some decent time and effort into some of my posts but you take the cake there.

Oh yeah, I like to play the beginning part of the zombie survival guide to get them in the mood for this one. It only take a few minutes. I forget who posted it but it's on here somewhere. You don't have to print the cards or play the game, just show the students the little training course materials. Good times.

Cheers,
Wayne

Vitamin-d you are the f-ing man!  I really wanted to do this with my 3rd graders, but was worried it might flop with some of the girls.  So I did a test run on my after school yesterday and they all went freaking bananas for it!  I showed the after the boat ppt, and then the girls were like, "But teacher, who got bit?!  What is the story?!"  I told them I'd write a story to follow up because they put so much thought into it :)

Thanks so much for sharing.  You obviously put a ton of time into this lesson and it really shows/makes my after exam classes much more engaging.  Thank you thank you thank you!

Hey amn34, glad your class enjoyed it so much!
Awesome. And do let us know how you decide to finish the story in the end.
The general consensus with my kids was that everyone turned into Zombies and died, usually by the sword of Blade..!

I tried opening The Zombie Story ppt file but a message comes up stating PowerPoint can't read the outline from the file and that No text converter is installed for this file type.

Any help and insight would be appreciated.
Thanks.
