(Judy Yin) Grade 3, Lesson 12 - "Watch Out!"
« on: November 07, 2011, 12:51:40 pm »
Here is a game for this really dumbed down lesson. We decided to teach them as many adjectives as they can absorb which turned out to be a lot. I found it under someone's else book and altered it for ours.

The game fairly self explanatory but here are the sentences we had them use:
For the Lion, spider, and snake, they had to say one extra sentence:

Watch out!
It's a _______. (snake, lion, spider)
It's _______. (appropriate adjective) We tried to have them use scary for these three, but it was up to them.

For rest of the animals (and egg, fish and ice cream) they just had to say the last two sentences.
I have attached the word document so you can edit it if you want. Just note that it's a tricky bugger to edit and if you do, you have to convert to PDF to print or for some reason it prints a black background even though there isn't one present on the file. It prints fine in PDF form. The PDF file is attached. My students loved the go back to start spot (it's placed so far away from start and that's what they liked). I hope someone can use and enjoy. It went over far better than I expected to, as my kids were really enjoying using adjectives.

Here's a very simple ppt my CT made to introduce the vocab. It was useful for reinforcement for the game.
For the pictures they had to say what it was and to describe it using one or two adjectives.

Here's a what's missing game. They had to say It's____ and it's _____ (tastes like)

Here's a musical chairs game for this lesson.
The music is pass the ball, but it's definitely musical chairs.

We had them push the desks to either side of the room and put their chairs in a big circle minus one and they move within the circle of the chairs. When we got down to 8 chairs we took the chairs out of circle formation and put them back to back. When a student is out, they must identify the item on the screen and describe it.
When we took a chair out we lined them up against the chalkboard and that's where the out ppl sat. It's funny my students watched from the "penalty/out box" like they were sports spectators...hehe. To control the noise which is inevitable we made them repeat what the out student said, also we have a sticker rewards program and we threaten to take a sticker away from those who don't follow the rules or get too loud...hehe. They were very good and absolutely loved this. Enjoy. Hope you can use it.

speaking practice 'Watch out!' and 'Its _____ '
when the music stops, the child holding the ball has to act out the situation and say 'Watch out' or 'its ____'
Funny how simply it is, but how excited children get with music and a ball!
