Another "Make your own adventure" using Exploding dog images.

I built on the Grade 1 Lesson 9 'I need some advice'.
The lesson was basically:
Revise and practice 'you should' responses
Play adventure game, each team having one chance to win
Play 'what should I do?' problem game with each team offering uggestions to 'problems'

I also pulled it out for an impromptu class with Grade 3 and they loved it 'as is'.

Played it with all 3 grades, it was great. 1st grade,my co-teacher had to translate a few things. 2nd grade were the best, they really got into it and wanted to see all the endings. 3rd grade had a lot of good laughs but got very impatient with some of the looping bits("wow! Duck world!"), so I ended up cutting it short at about 15 minutes for that class. Overall, great fun and the pictures kept it interesting. Recommended for those of us struggling with unmotivated post-exam students!

Wow! I love it! This looks like it took a LOT of time and effort make. I would guess at least 5 hours..

Where did you get the pictures? Did you draw them yourself?

So do you just work on having the students comprehend and then you have them say "You should (go to Duck world)", practice reinforcing "You should" over and over? Love it :D

Yeah, would it be possible to explain a bit more how you would use this? It looks great, I just feel like they would choose their path and the end comes rather quickly... how do you stretch it into a lesson?

This is amazing! Kudos on the slideshow. I also voice a question as to how this works as a full lesson? Perhaps you could let teams choose an answer, after they correctly make a sentence, or answer a question, or use this week's vocab/grammar? I see scores on the victory slides, but how to use them?
Also, this has British English, which is delightful but not correct for what we teach the student's here; the word "programme" might be confusing if they've never seen it and it's not in "ye old texte book."

Why is it incorrect to teach English here?

@Mycombs. By not introducing anything but American English to students we only perpetuate a cycle of ignorance when it comes to the diversity of our shared language. If this were desired, EPIK and private institutes alike would not be recruiting and hiring English teachers from Ireland, Scotland, England, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and, most recently, India.

I understand the hesitation a teacher might have in 'confusing' their students, however, the US-centric attitudes of English language education that have dominated Korea in the past are changing. Their are no rights or wrongs here. As native English speakers, we are not only hired to impart our language to Korean students but to share our culture as well. Differences matter here. If I am Australian, I should not feel obligated to do a Thanksgiving class. If I am American, I will most likely not dwell on Guy Fox Day.

Why not give your students a little more credit?

Offer them the alternatives and give them a choice.

Great powerpoint man it's awesome.
ok I used this lesson once today and it dragged a bit towards the end, but I think I have that taken care of now.
My plan for tom is to...
1. use the you should _____ pp to review and drill (the pp is pretty lame, but i'd didn't feel like putting much effort into it.)
2. have pairs of students create their own "problem/what should i do/you should" dialogs and present them to the class (I plan on giving them 3 or four minutes to write them and have maybe 5 groups present. I going to tell them that if they can write something that makes me laugh I'll give them candy. I might have to give out some pity laughs but I figure it will motivate them.)
3. play the adventure. I have 6 groups and I let one group chose at a time. They make a chose by saying "You should __" in unison. After that group finishes their adventure I select a group at random and ask them a question about the other groups adventure. If they get it correct they earn 15 points. If it's a long adventure I might give two groups a chance to answer a question.

I saw a bunch of people asking how to use this in the class so I figured I post my plan. I know the You Should pp sucks, so if anyone redoes it please repost. Also, I reworked the original PP a bit. I felt liked it looped a little to much, so I added an extra path to both sea world and dragon world. I did a few other things too, there were a couple broken hyperlinks that I think i fixed and I added an extra link to the "run away" section because I thought it was pretty funny and the students didn't get there. Gotta love crazy run on sentences. Good luck all.

Well, sorry, I didn't realise this had prompted so many responses. I've only just seen and will try to quickly answer questions.

All images are taken from all over the internet and should be credited to Sam Brown at Exploding Dog. As for the British English, whenever it comes up - and often as students point out my mistake - I simply write up on the board US and UK and add the 2 spellings side by side. It's important they recognise both.

As for the lesson I used it for, following the 'Advice' chapter of the Korean lesson:

Introduced the class with my own dilemma, eg "I am so hungry I can hardly teach this lesson" and eliciting 'you should', writing the sentence on the board, then asking what else I should do. My students know well enough now that I am looking for complete sentences.

I then went straight into the game, having volunteers (i.e. the confident ones) shout out instructions. They either died or won points - either way they saw that there was a goal of some kind.

Next I gave each of the 5 groups in my class a chance to 'win', so we played the game 5 more times, each group trying to find a new way through. Most classes actually loved the 'Duck World' loop, or at least they liked laughing at the others who got caught in it.

After each team had had a turn I gave out mini whiteboards and put on another ppt. This one was hastily thrown together so I never posted it, but it was simply a photograph and a silly dilemma (eg my brother wants to eat my dog, what should I do?). Groups had to think of the best advice and write it on the whiteboard. The ppt slide revealed suggestions scoring 1, 5 or 10 points so teams scored points for giving the 'best' suggestion. I'd tried it without the 3 suggestions on a class and they tended to repeat the same moronic suggestion like 'you should kill it', so I had to find an incentive to give a better response.

That filled 45 minutes easily and kept them engaged throughout.

So I just did this in my class and I gotta say it was a total hit! Made me feel really good. Thank you for making my day and also making 20 kids have a really good laugh. I'll probably do this again with my regular straggler classes during test week as a fun filler activity.
