Easy Recipe Ideas?
« on: November 28, 2011, 03:16:37 pm »
Hello Friends~

I'm putting together my winter camp schedule and usually include 1 easy to follow food recipe. I have a small budget for ingredients and only a microwave & refrigerator available to me.  The ingredients must be things I can find here, like at Emart or HomePlus. Any ideas? What worked well for you? Anything I should absolutely stay away from? Thanks for your suggestions!

Why don't you try Sonya's chocolate cake recipe? Looks simple enough.

I might consider using it myself for my winter camp.

My camp students have loved rice krispy bars. All you need are those individually wrapped marshmallows from Home Plus, some Tesco Rice Snaps (though cheerios or corn flakes would do in a pinch), and a little margarine.

I attached the ppt I used with the recipe, which is good for 1 group of 4 students. I also bought a few plastic bowls so each group could make their own batch (more fun than 1 big batch).

I don't know which part is more exciting... the fact that I can use this for winter camp or the fact that I can easily make and consume this in my apartment!

Thanks so much!!  :D

Umm rice krispie treats are great but you do need to heat the marshmallow and butter on the stove. FYI. If you dont have heat, I am not sure how you can make this? Let me know if  I'm missing something?
I am going to do food art with my camp. I will give them cookies and they will make icing and then decorate. I was also thinking of fruit art. My students really like creating things and competition. So anything you give them they will turn it into something great before eating it.

I made tortillas from scratch.  Here is a worksheet I made, with history, ingredients, method and recipe ideas.

L Waygook:
You can just microwave the marshmallows and margarine for 30-60 seconds, then stir the melted goodness until smooth and slowly add the cereal  ;)

There are loads of easy to make recipes on www.sparklebox.co.uk.  There are sequencing sheets and pictures to go along with it so you can use these as a discussion aid for low level students.

You don't have to get the silly individually wrapped marshmallows, by the way. Homeplus has a big bag of marshmallows for about 4,000 won.

My kids are probably going to make/decorate dipped Oreo cookies. I really wish we had the Trader Joe's peppermint ones though... yum. Super easy- Melt chocolate of your choice in a bowl in the microwave. Dip cookies in with a fork. Set on wax paper for them to harden. Cover in sprinkles while they're still a bit warm. (Homeplus has those, too.) Pop in the freezer for 20-30 minutes or so, then eat.

L Waygook:  if you type 'recipes' into the search bar on the home page they will  all come up.

Here's a PPT I made for the chocolate cake in a cup recipe. The instruction video is embedded, but keep the video file in the same folder as the PPT or it won't play. Also attached is the recipe in Word, so the kids can have a copy to follow.

Instead of using rice krispies, you can use popcorn. I like to drizzle the marshmellow & butter all over the popcorn and then mold them into balls.

i have the exact same at my school, a refrigerator and a microwave. i have made caramel apples, using chopsticks inserted into the apples and melted caramels candies with a little milk and dipping them in chocolate chips and sprinkles. for the caramel apples you will also need wax paper for cooling. i've also made nachos and english muffin pizzas. this week i'm going to make quesadillas. i've done the chocolate cake in a mug and it tasted horrible. my kids tastes don't run as sweet as kids back home. the most positive feedback has been from the savory foods we've made. they had a lot of fun with the caramel apples, but they only took a couple of bites and took the rest home, after which they may have thrown them away.
