Optical Illusions, redux
« on: November 23, 2010, 07:54:44 AM »
Hey ya'll! The Optical Illusions test was a popular thread recently, and it is a lot of fun. Several people made suggestions and additions, and I have refined all the ideas and illusions into 1 powerpoint with a worksheet, so you can make the lesson more educationally valuable. Works for any Middle-school level, and probably any grade level in Korea if you modify the language.
Thanks to all the original posters with great ideas, the students really like this stuff!
Attachments:
1. Cleaned-up Powerpoint show with extra illusions and numbered slides to match the Worksheet
2. A worksheet that follows along with a majority of the slides, and has numbered questions matching the numbered slides.
3. You'll want to use this video for the last 3 questions:

You really shouldn't conflate illusions that magicians perform with optical illusions...

I think what jakub is getting at is that optical illusions are tricks that our brains are playing on us (everything is clearly there in front of us and we shouldn't be seeing the illusion), whereas magician's illusions are tricks that the magicians are playing on us. One is biological, whereas the other is more of a deception through a sequence of events.

Magic tricks, or drawings; they are both awesome.  ;D
Students love them and they are interested to discuss, so it's a success as an English class!

This seems like a lot of fun.  I'm going to give it a shot this week with my middle school 1st graders.  Thanks!

It's written on the tiger... his stripes write out the words.

Found an awesome video by an awesome band (Whitest Boy Alive) that features a lot of these optical illusions, set to music. It's perfect for this lesson!

Many thanks to both of you; this will work nicely for a lesson I'll have to teach after break!
