Hey,
this is a lesson plan that myself and two others came up with. It's really good fun and the kids love it.
The level is High school-Low-Inter
Enjoy.

Hmmmmm. The PPT works fine for me, but how do you use it in class? And what is this Kimbap English thing at the end?

Going Shopping Mid Level High School

Demo lesson I had to do, around shopping vocabulary. Includes 'Price is Right guessing game' to practice vocabulary.

Prezi file http://prezi.com/gqno9zbeqg8e/demonstration-lesson/ here

.ppt for the game, and extremely pedantic lesson plan .doc

I hope someone can get some use out of it :D It went down pretty well

This is a great idea! I like your 'pedantic'-ness  It makes it so everyone can teach it, or understand how you originally wanted it done.

Thanks again!

Shopping, Price is Right
« Reply #10 on: June 09, 2011, 11:50:35 am »
Revise numbers and pop a few questions about shopping.
Divide the class into teams, get each team to guess the price of the item. The closest team to the price gets a point and an opportunity to answer a question for another point. Items and prices are taken from Gmarket. Yes I'm a time waster

DEPARTMENT STORE SHOPPING

ONE STOP SHOPPING

My reason for choosing this topic, in the past week ironically many english lessons had the word DEPARTMENT and learners did not know the meaning of the word......so i thought it would be interesting to explain them the meaning of the word department by using a departmnet store.....I used many male products as examples, only because i am at a boys high school..... you can change the products to suit your school learners....

i taught the subject of shopping for three consecutive classes to all three grades at my tech high school. they are low level so breaking things down is kind of necessary. also, most of the students are not really interested in english, so my co teacher recommended (when i first started there) to always include a game to kind of trick them into learning while having fun.

i mostly stole and modified other lessons, so thank you to all past contributions and ideas.

the first lesson introduces the idea of different stores and some of the items you can buy at each one. try to elicit answers as much as possible. for instance, first try to elicit the different store names. "where do you buy clothes? a clothing store." next try to elicit items from each store before moving into showing pictures and having them name the item. after going through all the pictures move into the game - pictionary. make teams and have one student come up at a time. pick an item from the list and have them draw it. they have twenty seconds for their team (only their team) to guess what they are drawing. if they answer correctly, they get 1 point. then ask (whether they got it or not) where you buy it. if they get the right store, 1 more point. candy to the winning team.

the second lesson reviews the first quickly, then moves into talking about money and numbers. the focus is to practice saying numbers in english. again, elicit whenever possible before showing/saying the answer.  after reviewing numbers, starting with the easy ones and moving to hard, longer ones (being sure to distinguish between thirty/thirteen, etc.) move to the game - pictionary. my english room at this school has a bunch of whiteboards, so each team gets a whiteboard. show an item and have them guess the price, in won. go around to each team and have them say their number outloud in english. the closest team (without going over, just like the real show) gets one point. good idea to have a list of all the products and prices so you know if they all go over, then you can write down the lowest team's guess and tell them less than that. if they guess exactly (which did happen about 3 times) they get 3 points.

the third lesson was meant to introduce some new material - dialogue while shopping - but also to review the past two lessons. go over the phrases used while shopping, of both the customer and store employee. the game is wheel of fortune. i just cut up strips of paper that had the different values that are on the wheel and had them pick one out of a bag. then they guess a letter. if the letter is in the puzzle, they get the money on the strip of paper. they have to have money in order to buy a vowel.

let me know if there are any questions. feel free to change anything you want.

Some sample dialogue for shopping role play using  your own personal outrageous items- but the condition is when the students perform their group skits, their chosen item must have some 'magic' quality; ie "This paintbrush is special and costs 1 million WON because it can CHANGE YOUR FACE INTO _______!!" They really loved that element of creativity.

thanks for the ideas!
I'm actually working on a "Fashion" themed lesson plan for my high school of all girls...I found a video on youtube with the trends of 2012 and I'm going to see if I can show a quick clip of a fashion show/one of the fashion-based reality tv shows.

hope my classes like it, I'll report back next week!

70 question game with a Home Plus theme. Categories include electronics, food, clothing, pets, toys, bed, sporting goods, baby, tools and bath. 10 slides in the game are "How much is it?", where all teams guess the price of a product.

Wow this is perfect! Good PPT skills you are so much more patient than me! I want to do shopping next class so this will be a good way to have a fun lesson.

Just wondering, did this last the whole class?

Thanks.
