Unit 1 - I Love My New Class

Hey,
Here are the materials I have prepared for unit 1. There are two power points and 1 game (Snakes and Ladders) thus far, I will upload another activity in the next few weeks.



PPT 1: Grade 5 - Unit 1 - I Love My New Class - Grammar Pt1

This one focuses on the following grammar points:

a) Nice to meet you - Stolen from someone else - shows we should only use "nice to meet you" the first time we meet someone.

b) How are you? V's How's it going?
(How are you to people you are not so close with, hows it going to friends)

- Not too bad. Thanks. / Not so good. I'm _______ / Great. Thanks.


Grade 5 - Unit 1 - I Love My New Class - Grammar Pt2

This one focuses on the following grammar points:

a) Nice to meet you V's Glad to meet you
b) Goodbyes
- See you _______ (soon, later, tomorrow etc)
c) Have a nice ______ (day / afternoon / morning etc)


Grade 5 - Unit 1 - Snakes & Ladders - Lesson 1

This is a game template i made. I used the same formatting as popular games (such as Angry Birds - Thanks to the maker of that) to make a simple to use Snakes and Ladders board game.

To move the counters (a soccer ball and a basketball) simply click once to 'pick' them up, and click again to 'drop' them.

Each square on the board has a link to another slide (the question slides). The link is situated along the top of each square (it is invisible). Click the top of a a square to go to the question slides (There are 20  different slides - they may come up several times during the game - so don't be surprised if the same questions come up 3 or so times)

On the question slides, click the question box to show the answers. The heart with snake icon that appears will link you back to the main board). On the slides with cartoon characters and conversations click the character on the right of the screen to reveal the conversation boxes one by one.

When you 'drop' the balls on the relevant squares (on the main game board) - make sure to drop them near the bottom of the square (if you drop them at the top of the box, the hyper link will activate).

Here is a PPT I made for my opening class with many different expressions.  I didn't label any of the emotions and I had the students name the emotions as they see them.  So of them can have multiple answers (ie mad/angry, scared/shocked/surprised, sleepy/tired, etc...)

Here is a matching game I made.  I'm planning on breaking the students up into two groups. Then having them play this game. They have to read the dialog and match the characters together. 

***I'd look over it before getting into class so that you know which characters match up with each other.

I found there were a few errors in the box closing buttons for piglett spongebob and some other character so I fixed them.

Use a song to teach them the greeting forms.
Practice the phrases and their corresponding body gestures.
Hows it going?- Both arms out
Great- right thumb
Good- left thumb
I’m okay- Hand on chest
Not so good- Shaking head left to right
Not so bad- nodding up and down
I am glad to meet you- shake hands with the person on your left and right
Have a nice day- two thumbs up

Worksheet with grammatical structure, vocab, a dialog fill-in (not dialogs from the book), a sentence correct and an order activity to go with Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree, the basis for the book's story I believe.

I used this video for motivation at the beginning of Day 2.  It's just some guy repeating "Hey, man, how's it going?" over and over with different inflections/emotions.  The students laughed and then tried to imitate him, so I guess it was a success.

NOTE: I started it at about 0:21, since the beginning would probably just confuse the students.

A ppt about how to shake hands that I will use during lesson 1.4 to follow up on the "Hello School" segment. I'm hoping students will be real creative and start using rad handshakes for the rest of the year. Start a revolution haha.
