lesson plan about bullying?
« on: November 30, 2010, 08:52:27 am »
I'm teaching at a rural high school in southern Korea and an incident happened where a student from another school came to attend my school's festival and beat up one of my students in the classroom.  Several other students were in the room and watched it happen but didn't do anything to stop it, nor did they tell the teachers.  We found out about it because the student who had been beat up said he had a headache and we noticed his face was swollen.

I want to do a lesson about bullying and bystandership, but don't know how to best go about it since my students' skills are lower than expected for their age.  Any ideas?  Thanks in advance for your help!

During the first part of this school year some of my students were caught in a similar situation.  They would come down to my classroom during the lunch break for "playtime".  One day, I happened to visit my class during this time and found that one of my boys had been 'handcuffed' with his own belt.  The whole situation seemed odd so I grabbed the handcuffed student's hands and pulled him off to the side to ask him what was going on.  I asked him in both English and Korean and he just shrugged his shoulders as if to indicate it was no big deal and that their playtime was indeed that and not "playtime".

I came to find out a week later that one of the other boys, one of his 'friends', had been tying him up, beating him, and taking his lunch money for about two weeks.  Needless to say, I felt the same rise to action you do now.  Fortunately, my co-teacher, who is absolutely amazing, handled everything and taught the other kids who saw all of this going on but didn't intervene in some way that their actions were not honorable, as students or as decent human beings.  She stuck it to them pretty hard and then had meetings with the parents of all the kids involved.

I spoke to the students myself to let them now how deeply upset and disappointed I was with them and it was obvious that they took it to heart.   Fast forward two weeks later and several of the boys involved come running to my classroom to inform my co-teacher and me of some bullying incident happening at that moment.  It was beautiful!

I wish I had some good content to offer up.  I guess I just wanted to share that anecdote in order to offer some encouragement.  I appreciate what you're trying to do and I know that speaking to your kids about this will make a difference in/for some.
Good luck with the lesson~Cheers!

I have seem some interesting looking material on bullying on eslprintables.com, but you have to join up to have access to them. Try looking there for some ideas at least, though, even without becoming a member.

Thanks for your comments, I really appreciate it!  I've already done several lessons on bystandership, including showing them Freedom Writers, Glee, and several presentations about the Holocaust, but the information doesn't seem to stick for very long.  I think time for a frank dialogue about it is a good course of action!

In the high school folder there are some lessons on racism and multi-culturalism etc, that might fit in with those other topics you have covered. I'm not sure what the quality is like but they could be a good starting point for you to gather ideas. I think the member who uploaded them is called jason something.

**** I just noticed this thread IS in the high school folder, haha! Anywayt he user name is jsauchuk and they are on the 11th page.

There is a show on MTV called "If you really knew me" It's pretty good especially for teens and young kids. A lot of times students at my school will have to go to a lesson or a rehearsal during school so the class will be half empty so I would play this video for them to watch if it had Korean subtitles. If anyone finds an episode with Korean subtitles please let me know!

I can't stand the bullying!!

A lesson on bullying

I'm planning on doing a lesson on bullying as my school is raising awareness on it at the moment.

I've put together a PPT on it, but my main aim is to get them actually talking about it as a discussion class. I also found this lesson plan idea (attached) from www.esl-library.com and thought I'd share it.

I also found these clips...

... and these newspaper articles from other threads on here, that I thought would be good to use.

I also adapted the worksheet that Shhowse posted too.

Hope this is useful.... :D

FOLLOW UP:
Ok so I've been doing this class this week with my G1 and G2 students, it actually went really well! They were very responsive and vocal, and they enjoyed the video clips. I also did the screwing up the piece of paper thing at the end (see below link, it's included in the PPT) and they were all like "Whooooaa!"

You can easily adapt this lesson to include role plays, but I found it easily filled up the 50 mins. If you get through the PPT with a few mins to spare, there's a video you can discuss (the "A final thought" slide). I did amend this later by adding in some Korean words (thanks to my co-t) for some of the lower G1 students who didn't understand some of the vocab.

Good luck and be sure to raise awareness on this important issue!!

Here's some songs that I used to discuss bullying with my class...My classes don't respond to lessons that have very serious topics but i thought this was important to discuss, so the only way i thought to do that was to include music

Rachel Crow: Mean Girls

Jessie J: Who's laughing now?

There is a film comprehension lesson on bullying here:
http://film-english.com/2011/04/06/bullying-lesson-plan/

I think it sounds like an effective lesson, but I'm wondering how it would go down at school seeing as it includes a) bad language and b) animated suicide (!).

Thoughts, anyone?
