I like to make as many of the visuals for my unit as I can match.  So, for no particular reason, this unit is Garfield themed.

bomb games were great, but kind of outdated no matter how nice it actually looks. if you can modify the game into a trashball or flick race game. it keeps them much more motivated to participate and practice the language. adding some skill or random chance(mysterybox) really takes the class to the next level.

a nickels worth of advice:
these books have awkward dialog, videos, and animations. if you have fun with it, they will too. I wish they had more cards like the books last year. those were really nice. perforated cards were a godsend form the cutouts of yesteryear.

I showed this at the start of class, then drew a little stick guy on the board and two rectangles (one near the stick guy and one further away).  I had the students tell me which was "near" and which was "far."  Then I asked them which words go with near and far (I said "___ is a book" to elicit "this" and "that", and drew two more rectangles for "these" and "those").  It worked pretty well, and even my co-teacher was cracking up at Grover.

Most students already know numbers up to 20, but a few struggle, so this is a good way to practice/review.  I didn't find any songs I liked for bigger numbers, unfortunately.  (There are a few on YouTube, but they're either incredibly annoying, too juvenile, or just really boring.)

*Helpful tip (from my last year's co-teacher): Practice pronunciation of -teens and -ties as follows
 13 thirTEEN     30 THIRty
 14 fourTEEN    40 FOURty
  ...etc.

These are the materials I have prepared for unit 2.

Lesson 1


PPT 1: Grade 5 - Unit 2 - How Many Clubs - Grammar Pt1


This one focuses on the following things:

a) How many ______s do you have?   //// I have _______ ________(s).

b) It also includes two games.

One is a hidden picture games with some examples of clubs that the students might know. Click a square to remove it, click the star to remove all.

The other is a 'guess how many game' ... pictures flash up and vanish again on the click of the 'hint' button. When you press 'show' - the static pictures will be displayed.

The students should guess using the correct grammar structure (I have _____ ______s)

Grade 5 - Unit 2 - How Many Clubs - Shoot Out - Slim Version


There was a problem with the hyperlinks ... updated version Apr 2nd to fix that problem.


I have made a penalty shootout game, it is based on popular template4s (Angry Birds etc) but has videos embedded in it.  This game is a massive 3.3 gigs for the full version (over 100 vids) ... so i made a slim version of it to upload for everyone else ... but even that is over 1 gig in size (40 vids) ... as a result, i can not upload it on here ... so ....

I have made a drop box account, ...

1) Go to www.dropbox.com

2) Log in using the following details

• UserName/Email: waygook_user@yahoo.com
• Password: waygookuser2012

3) Download all the files in the folder named 'Penalty Shootout Game'
There are 40 videos and some templates (for classes i have used the game for) - there is also a blank template in there for you to modify as you see fit.
Please be careful not to remove any files from the folder. If you do, other people will not be able to use the game.

4) Put all the files in the same folder - the videos will not play if they are not stored in the same place as the slide show its self.

5) use.

The game works in much the same was as most games on here. Two teams, pick a letter ... this will take you to a question slide - click the question to reveal the answer - if the student is incorrect, click the cross (you will return to the main screen) - if the student is correct, click the check mark. You will be taken to a penalty screen. The team choose a number, each number links to a video - if the player scores a goal, 1 point. If the player misses - 0 points. there are red and yellow cards as well .... I play with a yellow card being - 1 point for the opposing team, and the red card being minus one point for the playing team,

Played it for the first time today, the kids loved it.
