Here is the teacher's book for Lesson 3 - I Have a Runny Nose.

This is an introduction to chapter 3.
I have a ____
runny nose
head ache
stomach ache
fever
cold
I am sick
medicine
nurse
hospital
At the end, there is a memory game for the above vocab. ;)

This is the 4 Corners game. If you don't know it, basically you assign each wall in the room with a number.

When you say "GO!" the kids have to quickly choose a wall and stand by it. If the wall they're standing at is the wall that comes up on the ppt they are eliminated and have to sit down. If not they keep going.

You can get them to repeat the vocab each time a new slide comes up.

You can get them to practice the key expressions as they go to sit down i.e. "I have to sit down. I have a headache."

5th Grade handout for lesson 3. I definitely took several ideas already posted and merged them into this handout. Forgive me for not remembering the specific individuals but (as always) the credit belongs others, not me.

Included are vocabulary, expressions, Look and Listen, Your Turn, Cultural Footnotes, and word search (with answers).

Ask Ss to watch. After the video, in groups, ask them to write down the different health terms heard from the video. When two minutes is over, ask groups to share their answers and write the terms on the board.

Use the ppt to show them the vocab after the video or later. At the end of the ppt is a game. It should be fun!

Here's what I plan on doing for period 4 (writing practice).

Running dictation style activity.
-make 4 teams line up facing the black board (or each team has a whiteboard)
-student's ask "What's the problem?"
-teacher has to mime an illness
-students have to come up with an answer and must write it on the board

*alternatives:
-students take turns writing whole sentences (1 student per Q/A)
-or-
-each student can only write one word at a time

-1 point for a correct answer
-1 point for grammar
-1 point for quickest team (optional)

Lottery Game

It's essentially the opposite of Bingo. My coteacher used this for lower level students. It may work out for your classroom needs too.

Instructions:
1)Print out 1 page for students.
2) Have Ss practice writing vocabulary words in the blanks
3) Have Ss randomly number the first word box from 1-9 (ex. stomachache-4, runny nose-5, headache-6, etc)
4) Choose a Ss to share their first choice (ex. 1=cold). If other Ss also chose cold as number 1, they should circle the answer
5) Continue process until a Ss has at least 4-5 that are the same.
**Be careful Ss don't try and change answers--have Ss use pens. They can play the next round on a different grid.
