A fantastic motivation video ~~

the old "I knew an old lady who swallowed a fly" song; sung by Judy Collins on the Muppet Show in 1977.

You could then review all the animals she mentions and move on to talking about which animal eats which.

I've attached a lyrics sheet with all the animal names missing. They can fill in the blanks as they listen -- it's super basic. Nothing too flashy. I've attached as .pdf I'm afraid because I use Pages and not Microsoft Word.

Here is a video I made with my 5th graders for my 6th graders.

After watching it we asked them:
What did you see?
What animals did you see?
What do ___s eat?

I also made this ppt for listen and repeat. In one class a students knew "food chain" in English so I distinguished between the linear food chain and the interconnected food web. (not using words like linear:)

A game that I played with my grade 6s today. They had an absolute blast. It is adapted from a game that I played as a child. I don't remember the name, but basically you go around shaking people's hands. If they scratch you while shaking hands, they are the murderer, and you die after shaking one more person's hand.

Here, it is adapted so that the students are snakes and frogs. Snakes kill the frogs. They must use the target language, "What do snakes eat? Snakes eat frogs."

I know that often students will skip the whole speaking English bit and go straight to the action, but in all of my classes today, the students used the required English.

The game is best explained by the PPT attached.

We used 25 minutes or so for the game. It takes a while to explain, since it is so new to them.

Good idea, I will try this game. But why shake another student's hand before dying? I explained this game to my coteacher and she asked me this. Also, I'm trying to think of another alternative for those students who get eaten by snakes. Since they have to sit for 25 minutes, I think they will get restless and just start messing about ㅜ_ㅜ

I think I am going to play the shaking hand game, but more like the zombie game posted elsewhere.

Instead of dying frogs will die and be reincarnated as a snake and then keep playing. So gradually the snakes will spread through the class until there are no frogs left.

I am not sure if it will work, but I know that my students don't do sitting out while others continue playing the game successfully and with only 2 snakes it will take quite a long time to get a winner.

I am also going to use the old lady who swallowed a fly story.

I want to use the circle of poo, but I will have to check with my co-teacher first. She might not think it is appropriate.

In the version of this game I've played there is a detective. That is why students wait 5 seconds (or until after shaking another person's hand) to die. This also eliminates the problem of students who are "dead" waiting a long time.
To play I have all students close their eyes, I walk around the room and tap the murderers (snakes) on the head (one or more). I then ask for a volunteer to be the detective. The murderers (or snakes) tickle when they shake hands. Everyone shakes hands saying whatever dialogue is relevant to the lesson (it works great for the meeting and greeting lesson). As soon as the detective is able to correctly accuse the murderer(s) the game starts again with new murderers and a new detective.
