(YBM) Grade 6, Lesson 1 - "How's It Going?"
« on: February 27, 2012, 09:01:28 AM »
I'm not sure where exactly to start a link for Chapter 1 in this book "How's It Going?" so I'm going to start here!  Please move it if necessary.

Here is an Introduction and Bomb Game for the first chapter that I edited from a previous year.

Mr Bean does chemistry.

I'll be showing it for the first lesson back and the start of the 1st chapter.
I'll be using it for How's it going? 6th grade

I posted these in the book thread, but figure that we might as well start doing this as requested by the mods.

Nothing too amazing here...just a simple introduction ppt...and a Ninja Bomb Game using my Ninja Bomb template from last year.

Here are the materials that I made so far. I broke them down by sections within the Lesson but they can be moved around.

http://www.ybmtextedu.com

This website contains lessons plans, quizzes and tests to support your lessons.  There are also flashcards and pictures that you can save to your computer on this website.  It does require registration but has a foreigner section so we can register.  Here are the lesson plans for this unit that I found on the site.  Also attached are pre-tests.

My co-t and I use the CDs and follow the book quite closely. All the ppt games and activities on waygook have been an absolute lifesaver. However, my New Semester's Resolution this year is to decrease my dependence on the computer. Also, I've noticed that staring at a TV screen all the time isn't good for our health (teachers and students alike ^^) Now, I write the key expressions and new vocabulary of each part onto the board.

I hope the lesson plans I contribute will be able to help people who run into tech problems, or who have limited access to technical resources in their classrooms.

(First English lesson of the semester) Lesson 1 PART 1

Intro
Introduce yourself - name, like, dislike etc
Classroom Rules (ppt and poster)
Title and aim of lesson 1
>How's it going?
>Point out that "How's it going" and "How are you" are the same BUT you use "How's it going" with your friends
>Brainstorm happy and sad answers

Look and Listen
What do you think they are talking about? Where are they?
(Listen to the first half)
Ask questions: What are their names? What did they say? What class are they in?

(Listen to second half)
Ask questions: What's the girl's name? What class is she in?
>Review ordinals i.e. first, second, third etc
>Introduce second key phrase: "Where's your classroom?" "It's on the ____ floor"
Where's her classroom?

Ask class "Where's the ____ room?" with answers based on your school's building structure.

Write the answers to the "Check Up!" questions in their book

Listen and Speak
zoom through this - have class listen and do a quick teacher/class role-play

Bingo
9 grids
Students write ordinals First to Ninth into the squares (any order they want)
Class asks Teacher "Where's the English classroom?". Teacher answers "It's on the ___ floor", choosing an ordinal at random.
Students cross out the ordinal on their grid.
First to get a line wins.

Scenes #3 and #4
(Watch the scenes)
-Where does she want to go?
-What does the boy say?
>New phrase: Go up the stairs
>Review direction phrases: Go straight, turn right, turn left
-What does the girl say?
>New phrase: You can't miss it.

Say It
-Teacher and class role play

Directions activity in pairs
-each pair gets a sheet

Here is a board game I made for the kids to play at the end of class.  It's a simple and easy way for them to practice speaking the basic dialogue.  I'm going to have them play in teams of 2, and RPS to see how many spaces they move (if they win with R-1, P-2, S-3).

I sort of cut and pasted many of the existing PPTs for the 1st period class, and have now made my own for the 2nd period. My co-t and I really took our time introducing the new expressions and going over the numbers and what not. Therefore, we didn't get to the Fun Fun 1 part. We will start with that next class. So make sure you delete that slide if you've already done it.  This PPT includes a review from 1st period, and then the "Look and Speak" and "Say It" portions from the textbook. It's very simple, but I hope this is of use to some of you. Time to start giving back :D

Some materials that I got or made up for this chapter.

The videoclip can be used as a motivation clip to be used at the beginning.

The vocabulary powerpoint has vocab for this chapter and the Word document, 'vocabulary chapter 1' is good as a handout.

For the listening activity, printout the Word document, 'listening activity outline' and photocopy and give out to student pairs or individually. Have a copy of the answer sheet where only you can read it. Display the powerpoint 'listening activity' and get the class to ask you where each particular room is and you give them the instructions on where to find the particular room. Good as an activity.

Here's some motivational videos, different ways to say "How are you?" or "How's it going?"

Friends Montage - Joey's "How YOU doin?"

Annoying Orange - Wazzup!

Kpop stars speaking English and get a little confused: "How are you doing?"

How's it going (a little weird but give it a gander)

Hey, I've made a super mario game for the lesson 'How's it going?'. I haven't yet used it yet but apparently it was popular with the classes last year.

Oh, on 4 of the slides the pictures appear in the wrong order (I'm good' slide, 'I'm angry' slide, missing letter Happy slide and the 'I'm Happy' slide) - haven't had chance to change them yet as I can't understand korean ppt. Will do it at home later.

(re-uploaded with a few intro slides that I probably shold have put in earlier)

Hi everyone. This is a game/activity via PPT I made to help supplement the text's often very static speaking activities. This activity in particular is meant for p.9's "Listen and Speak" section.

These are the instructions to the activity which can also be found in the notes on the first slide. Hope this helps, and happy teaching.

Quote
The point of this activity is to get students moving and using the Target Language.
Place sticky notes or something of different colors at each desk.
Each student will say the phrase that corresponds to their color. Switch them throughout the game to make sure each student uses each phrase.

Here are two PPT's. The first is my introduction to Lesson One. The second is a game. There's a focus on the two key phrases, the new vocabulary, ordinal numbers and, classrooms in a school. For the game, I divide the class into two teams and give them a soft ball and the throw the ball from one team to another and whatever student catches the ball has to answer the next question.

Hope it's of some help! :)
