Hey, thought I would add mine to the list. It's aimed at Elementary school students and I tried to keep it short.

For the different elementary grades could you use the same introductory lesson plan but vary the difficulty of each activity.

Ye Sure. I am going to probably use the same introductory PPT for all my grades as part of my greeting before I move onto review and presentation of the lesson.

Do you recommend having an activity at the end of your introduction lesson? I'm a newbie at teaching EFL, and have yet to do my introduction lesson. Thus far I have a simple ppt, but don't have anything else. I figured if I had any time left I could ask the students if they had any questions for me; granted, I am teaching a 3rd class to begin with, so I doubt they'll have any questions for me.

That sounds really nice; what's the rate of response you receive? I'm worried that I'll ask students questions and be met with complete silence. -_-:

Being from New york I made a ppt with a bunch of things it is famous for and then zoomed into a house where I had a picture of my family with emotion clip art to define them. I don't plan on teaching all these emotions to the younger classes but I may use them to check vocab on grade 6. Lastly I put a slide of "Things I like..." with a new image and word popping up one at a time. Most of them are really simple and two or three of the slides are goofy/funny to warm them up. (like my cat standing on me while I sleep)

I haven't done this before so take it with a grain of salt but I just went with the basics. I'm running for different grade levels with multiple co-teachers so I don't know how I would even cater to individual classes or run book related lessons with my introduction.

Guess and predict game.
« Reply #10 on: March 05, 2012, 11:01:57 AM »
I thinking of playing a game with the students to introduce myself.
A sort of prediction activity.
Ask them where I am from.
What they think my name is.
What my hobby is... etc.

And then when they create a profile for me...

I can reveal my profile and then we can compare how different or similar their predictions were.
Also, I can get to know where there level of language is at.

I'm at a girls' middle school.  For the 1st graders, I tell them my name (I make them call me Mrs...), then before saying anything else, I have them raise their hand to ask me a question about myself.  If they make the effort to say ANYTHING in English, no matter how mangled, I let them throw a sticky ball at a target & win points for their team.  Winning team gets to leave class first, or whatever.  Of course I get the typical, tiresome questions, but they seem to like it & I get a feel for what they're capable of.

My favorite game to play on the first day is "Two truths and one lie." Put students in teams to add some competition. Put 3 statements on a slide at a time. Have students say which they believe is a lie. First team to 5 points...wins!

How to play:

1. Write 2 truths about yourself (your name, where you are from etc)
2. Write one lie (your age, etc)

welcome/first day

Hi, this is a powerpoint I made for the first day of class.  It introduces myself and the class rules.  For the introduction, there are pictures and the kids have to guess the question that goes with that picture.  (A picture of pizza= "Is pizza your favorite food?")  There are also icebreaker/get to know you activities (2 truths and a lie, name chain) and a categories game that will help you gauge your students' language level.  You can easily adapt the introduction pppt to your own needs.

Hi all,

Here is my lesson plan for my 1st day.  I introduced myself with a friendly smile and showed a ppt and video clip of Tourism Vancouver (my home city).  The kids were amazed at seeing Canada for the 1st time!

It was a good class.

Tourism Vancouver

Enjoy

Here's my powerpoint that I used for my first day. I kinda modified one that we received via email before we got to our cities.
The four corners game didn't really work so well since the students just used the time to talk to their friends so I changed it so that they just stand up whenever they like things instead.
At the end, I took the idea that someone already posted on here (thank you!) about having them write down 3 things that they like and the others having to guess who it is based on the three things (food, color and class subject).
SO far it's gone really well and the students love learning about me. Plus they get to speak, listen and write all in one lesson.

I love your ppt! I especially enjoyed the animal section and loved the little art section! Thank you!  8)
Where did you find the clip art?

Here is one I made as well, pics of animals, money etc and a drawing activity at the end.
