(YBM Maria Oh) Grade 6, Lesson 2 - "Spring is Here"
« on: March 05, 2012, 02:35:19 PM »
Here is a handout I made for 6th grade lesson 2. Everything should be fine with this one. But double check it just in case I messed something up!

- Worksheet with structures, vocab, a code breaking activity and a word search.
- Vocab PPT to go with it.  Both are (sort of) StarCraft themed...my class is all boys.
- PPT to review seasons.

Might also make use of the Sesame Street Spring Is Here video:

Thank you! A great PPT. I'v made a unscramble the sentence game off of it.
After doing the PPT, I read some of the dialogue and then stop. They must provide the answer. I give them a little stack of words. First team to unscramble first, correctly, wins.
Phrases attached.

Here are a few videos showing the transformation of the Earth during all 4 seasons.

First one is 3 minutes with speaking:

Second is 4 minutes with no speaking:

Thank you BBC!

Here is a blazing pens ppt I made. It's word scrambles and the students must unscramble the words. The sentence itself is not scrambled.

hey all,
I made Seasons and weather PPT for lesson2. I used some of your ppt images and slides and added more to it. Also added the target language at the end (which I get my students to write it down in their notenook and practice it in pairs) and questions you can ask for look and speak listening part on the text book pg 22.
Enjoy~ :D

Does anyone know any (Easy & Difficult) Tongue Twisters on the topic of weather and season?

Molany

1. Some shun summer sunshine

2. Should she shut summer shutters slowly or should she shut summer shutters swiftly

3. Four Seasons
Spring is showery, flowery,bowery;
Summer is hoppy, croppy, poppy.
Autumn is wheezy, sneezy, freezy;
Winter is slippy, drippy, nippy.

4. Whether the weather be fine
Or whether the weather be not;
Whether the weather be cold
Or whether the weather be hot;
We'll weather the weather
Whatever the weather,
Whether we like it or not.

I'm having trouble writing a lesson plan for this particular class. I can't quite figure out how to present "why" in 40 minutes. Any ideas? I don't want to focus on weather, yet again, but the kids can't seem to grasp the concept of questions, in English. Ugh.

Here is a ppt that includes Taboo game as well as a warmup activity.

Ask Ss to describe the activity or festival in the video and have them guess what season its in. I recommend playing each video clip for no more than 30 seconds.

La Tomatina- Celebrated in Spain (August).  Just a fun holiday (there is likely more to it than that but after searching the net I still came out with a fun holiday).

Ballooning: Held in October in New Mexico

Quebec Winter Carnival: Largest carnival in winter (in the world)

Songkran: Thai  new Year (celebrated in spring-beginning of April)

The youtube links are attached to the ppt.  Please let me know if they don't work.

I took the other bomb game and made it more relevant to this lesson.  It's not really a bomb game rather a points game.

Here is a good song for the speaking contingent, or just for motivation.
Beatles, 'Tell Me Why'. Target Language "Why?" and "Because"...

My kids are addicted to the Beatles, we're still singing "Hello Goodbye" from the first Lesson, so this should be a hit!

Song and lyrics attached, but Youtube link is:

My co-teacher asked me to make a PPT about my country's (UK) seasons, with pictures and a little bit of info, so I did.

Here's a crossword for the 4 seasons with a PPT that has the answers.

I've also included a little PPT to highlight the difference between Australian seasons and Korean seasons to beef up the reading section towards the end of the unit.
