First day of class
« on: March 06, 2012, 08:47:31 AM »
"I had my first day of teaching yesterday! it went a lot better than i expected it to go! i thought that it would be a lot more harder. thankfully i had my co teacher by to help me. she can speak korea so she was able to help me out with the kids. i was shocked how fast the 40 mins i teach go by.
my kids seem like they are awesome and that we are going to have a lot of fun for the next 6 months.
I'm very impressed with the school as well. its a small school only 22 students in the whole school, but it is very clean and nice. I'm actually pretty glad that i teach only 22 students. i think it wold be a lot harder to get more students in one class to all pay attention.
i start teahing again today!

Cheers!

Hey

Glad your first day went well. Mine was pretty much the same aswell. I was so relieved that I felt comfortable stood up infront of a full class teaching. The kids all engaged really well and my co-teacher gave me some positive feedback on how she thought it went. Ive currently got a terrible cough though so just hoping that wont spoil today for me. Can't belive how fast the day went yesterday, liking that lots!

I'm still waiting for my first day! apparently I don't officially start teaching till the 3rd week in March, observing the class next week, Until then I'm desk warming, From what I've learnt of Korea so far, plans can change at the last minute, so I've prepared an intro class with a PPT about myself and a couple of Ice breaker games in case they decide to spring  class on me... I don't know really what else to do, co-teachers aren't very forthcoming with information, I guess it will only really come into place when I actually get started!

I teach tomorrow, 3rd grade. Hope it goes well. Have a PPT full of pics and will have them ask me some questions afterwards along with some icebreaker activities.

My hint for new people is to expect the unexpected. For example, this week I had a introduction ppt planned, but they failed to connect the projectors to the classroom computers making my ppt useless. Pretend that you know what your doing (even if the technology fails) and the students won't know the difference  ;)

My first class was so horrible.  No syllabus for me.  I had to come up with my own plan for 8 weeks of classes.  First class was grade 1-2 in a rural farming community and I had NO KT for 40 minutes.  I spoke 3 words of Korean and they spoke about the same in English but I credit those experiences to fast tracking my into being a better teacher.
I'm sure you will do great :)

My first day/week of middle school went great. I was a bit cheeky in that I just gave all students the same lesson - a sort of introduction about myself and getting them to speak to each other. Just try and make sure your first interaction with students is a fun/positive one as first impressions last a while! The Korean co-teachers (sometimes I had 2 or 3 in lessons) were great in that they spoke good English (unlike the ones I had in thailand that didn't turn up to lessons and didn't really speak English) and were really good at giving instructions and keeping discpiline if any classes got unruly. The one thing I almost had a problem with was them getting through the material too quickly - have a few back up games up your sleeve to time waste at the end of a lesson in case you get through everything.
