Hi all -

Frequent reader/mooch on the Orr threads, figured I'd start posting some too.

My school asks that I do ONLY the speak-out page, and split it over two weeks. So my lessons are each on ONE of the two target dialogues for each chapter.

Here is my lesson for grade 1, chapter 1, dialogue 1 ("Nice to meet you"). It's not particularly long or involved, but as you can see it involves a substantial class activity that should easily take up the bulk of class time. After the PPT presentation on the dialogue, students will work in pairs to write very brief (2-3 sentence) introductions of each other, then introduce each other to the class.

I usually let the students who just finished, pick who goes next. They seem to have an uncanny ability to pick the kids who need the most practice/are paying the least attention/are asleep, etc.

Do note that pictures of me and a friend of mine are used extensively on slides 6 and 13, you'll probably want to replace those.

Finally: no difference between the PPTX and PPT versions but I know not everybody can handle PPTX.

Here is my lesson on weather. The kids really seemed to enjoy it...especially KABOOM at the end - and it's a great game to kill like 25 to 30 minutes and also give each of the students a chance to talk. I have uploaded my overview of the weather vocab as well as the cards for the groups and for KABOOM (unfortunately these are in black and white, sorry for those of you who would want colour!)

For Lesson 1
Part B Weather
use pg. 12 weather map and play a team game
This game is based on one of the speaking activity ideas given from this website and I modified a bit and adapted to this lesson. I don't remember who, but the post title was speaking games..etc.
U should just prepare a toy hammer, fly swatter, or pointing finger..etc.

1. Divide the class in half or 3 teams.
2. Assign a number to each student.
3. Practice the weather words and cities aloud w/ the students.
4. Write down the weather words on the board.
5. Ask a question first and give students time to look for the answers.
6. Then call out a number and students come up to the board and grab the prop(for me, a pointing finger)
and point at the word from the board saying the answer in full sentence.
Ex) I ask "How's the weather in Tokyo?"
      Students come up and answer " It's sunny." pointing at the word. - The team gets a point.
7. Everyone repeat the question and answer.

Part A Introducing others
1. Assign students a partner.
2. Make them draw their partner’s portrait.
3. Then let students come up front and introduce their partners to class, showing the portrait, using key expressions as below.
A : Hi, class.
B : Hi, ________.
A : Class, this is my _______, _______.
B : Hi, ________. Nice to meet you.
C : Nice to meet you, too.

The pair and the whole class will participate and practice the dialogue. And the class get hilarious when the partners reveal the portrait. It's very good to practice names for first class, first lesson.
