Here is a reading exercise I used to show how past continuous can be used together with simple past. We read the story as a group with the assistance of the PPT and then I had them underline or highlight both simple past and past continuous.

I introduced the two tenses on the board provding a lot of example with the students help. I focused on the use of the coordinating conjunctions WHILE and  WHEN.

Ex: "I was walking down the street when it began to rain."

" I was eating kimbab when my mom called."

" I was standing under a tree when it began to rain."

I also provided examples that highlighted the use of the past continuous when referring to specific times:

"At ten o'clock last night, I was watching TV at home."

"Last August I was going to English camp while I was on summer vacation.

Or when two actions are happening simultaneously:

" While I was reading a book in my bedroom, my brother was watching TV in the living room"

I wanted to do an Alibi activity with my class but there are not enough students to make it interesting. I think it would be perfect if you have a larger class though.

I attached a worksheet that I found on Bogglesworld to save some time.

For writing, I am having the students make a "Bucket List".

This is not my ppt, but I am posting it on here for an idea for this lesson.

Bucket List worksheet I made to go with the ppt.

I printed it as a 2-sided worksheet.

Here is a Jeopardy game I made for this chapter.  I've included the list of questions if you want to make a different kind of game as well as my lesson plan.

Hope this helps.
