Hey what do y'all think about the vocab.
"I have an English class today."
or
"I have English class today."

"I have an English class today" only makes sense (to me) if you have more than one type of English class. If you only have one English class then you'd use 'I have English class today' at the risk of sounding ultra-not-correctish.

Kind of like the difference between "Today I saw God" and "Today I saw a god". I'm not sure, though. Thoughts?

I'm thinking I'll teach the textbook structure initially, and explain how I say it further down the lesson.

I had this today. If you remember last year's textbook, the phrase it taught was "I have [English] class today." Also, in the second listen and repeat of lesson 1, "Chris" very clearly says "We have science class today" while Yuna(?) answers "We have a music class, too." In my opinion it's not natural to use the article in that sentence; it makes it sound like a special, once-off thing instead of a regularly-scheduled event, which it obviously is. I told my co-teacher that it's better without the "a" and she explained to the class, so we'll be teaching them to say it without the "a", but pointing out that the phrase "We have a math test" is correct. I'd rather they know proper English than what the textbook says. (This is, after all, the same publisher that has the hideous phrase "Let's go with us" in the grade 6 book. Shudder.)

Game!

A quick time-filler game for period 1 or 2 is to divide the students into small groups, have each group come to the front one at a time and give them the days of the week flashcards face-down (each student can have more than 1). You then time how long it takes them to get into order; shortest time wins. I had about 5 min to spare at the end of class today and it worked pretty well ^^

I found this game from ablily on the national textbook thread from last year, and it was awesome! I just got done playing with 2 classes this morning and it went over so well. If you have the time, I definitely recommend laminating the timetables if you want to re-use them! I just did a quick review ppt (also briefly addressing the article usage in the key expression) and put the instructions at the end. Enjoy!

"Here is a musical chairs type of activity. There is no music though!

Anyways, here's how you play. Every student get's a timetable. (They are all different) Then, one student pulls out a piece of paper from a box that says the Day of the week and a class.
-Hand out timetables to students.
-IT picks from a guessing box. example: [English/Monday] Then IT will ask group. Do you have English class on Monday?
-Students look at their timetables and if they DO have English class on Monday, they stand up and answer, "I have English Class", THEN, find a new seat. IT will also have to find a new seat.
-Take away one seat each round.

Sometimes, it can get really crazy, but once the kids get used to it, it is really fun. My ct had the students say the phrase, then nobody could change seats until she said "Go". That controls it a little more. Enjoy! There is also a homework worksheet."

For speaking/reading, I gave each person in a group a piece of paper that said "Today is ______. I have ______ class" three times. Then, I gave each group 3 cards that said a day of the week (for example: Monday, Wednesday, Friday) and 3 more cards that said a class (for example: art, English, science). I told them to put a day of the week together with a class, then fill in the blanks on their paper (they should all write the same thing). Then, I had each group stand up and read the three lines together. Sorry, I don't have any attachments for this. I just cut up equal sizes of paper to write the classes and days on and the sentences were a part of something else.

Here is a powerpoint and game to practice "I don't have a ruler". "Don't worry."

Each student gets 6 items the same (just cut up pieces of paper) to start the game and have to get a complete set using the dialogue.

With some timetable changes this week, I am not sure if I will have time to use it, but I have played this game with 3rd graders before and it worked well.

I used the Mission Impossible Unscramble template to make an unscramble game for the 4th period. This activity usually goes over well in my classes. My classes are divided into groups of 4; they take turns with the whiteboard, so everyone has a chance to write. The others can help with the spelling. Another fun writing game is Writing Relay Race. Split the class into 2 teams. They make 2 lines at the blackboard. Call out a phrase/word. One student at a time writes a letter, passes the chalk to the team member behind them, and go the the back of the line. You must stand in the middle and erase the letter/word when/if someone makes a mistake. Whether you erase just the letter, word, or entire expression is up to how hard you want to make the game for your kids.

Here's my lesson plan and attached PPT for the 4th period:
1)Greet class
2)Warm up (How's it going, How was your weekend, etc)

4)Book activity (but not the book game)

I think Jammyb is referring to indirectly teaching them 'shut up' line as it is generally regarded as rude and offensive when we say it to peers and adults. I agree, they will probably start walking around and saying it.
