« on: March 15, 2012, 11:04:50 AM »
Hello,

I recently was told to teach kindy. The thing is its my first time as well as i am allowed no technology. They expect me to teach them english words, play games, and sing songsand read books...but i am at loss as to how im supposed to teach them anything (as well as keep their attention) without the use if a visual aid like powerpoint or youtube...

Any help on this would be so nice! Thank you

I rarely use powerpoint for my kindergarten students. I find flashcards are actually better with the younger ones.

I sometimes use videos for songs but I also find singing without the videos is ok (as long as the song has actions).

You didn't really state a level but...

This is an easy game if you want to teach phonics and if they have English names.  Substitute the letter you are practicing for the first letter of their name.  So if we are doing "F" Ann, Dave and Jim become Fan, Fave and Fim.  Don't use their Korean names unless you are confident you can pick out all the "bad" words, eg Hyun Tae  with "B" becomes Byuntae or pervert.  I usually skip vowels till the they learn long vowels.  Do multiple letters when you are practicing, the kids will often suggest letters so that their name is right and all their friends names are goofy.

Another easy game for letters is to get a cheap brightly colored balls.  They should be big enough that they aren't too easy for the kids to grab.  Start with one ball. Sit the children down, show them a letter toss the ball to a child, if the child can say the name of the letter they can toss it back to you.  If they can't they have put it back in your hand.  It works even better if the kids are sitting at a table where several can try to catch the ball or if you make a "table" by putting several desks together.  After they know the names of the letters you can add a (different colored) ball for a thing that starts with the letter, the child runs and touches the thing wherever it is in the class and later another ball for the sound of the letter.  I usually mark what each one is in marker as I confuse them when I'm using all three.  Introduce the game by getting the ball to some of the girls so the demonstration of the game doesn't get out of control.  The problem with this game is the boys will get excited and throw the ball at your head rather than toss it back.  The solution is simple.  If it happens the game is over for that day.  Alternately you could sit that child out for the rest of the game but they will police each other better if you end the game.

Kindergarten kids still want to make you happy so be lavish with your praise.

Hi~
The kindergarden students might like listening to you reading them a story book especially the ones which they already know in the first language. And you can also chant and dance. They love making origamis too.

Using powerpoint for Kindergarten is a horrible idea.

Go to supersimplesongs.com
Sing lots of songs, dance, make a routine.

Do a hello song and a goodbye song, give stickers often.
Read storybooks, play games, and use big flashcards to teach new words!

Hello and goodbye songs work like a bomb!  It gets them into a routine if you use the same hello song for a while each time you see them...

Stickers and sweets are what they are living for at the moment :P, so that's a good way to manage discipline.
After we learned a song with a dance, we usually have a dance off...boys against girls or two to three mixed groups.

Yeah I would have to agree with the previous posts. I usually play games like duck duck goose and sing songs while using hand gestures... They love it.

Thanks so much!!

Actually I BOMBED that first class..to the point where even the kids were embarrassed for me lol. But the 2nd class I brought my Ipad 2 and played songs from like the hello song and the how are young with print outs.

They also said they want me to read stories but i know these kids arent gettinig it.

They are really low level..if this was America they would barely be in preschool... so any book that I read is going over there heads. Though they are low level they pick up easily (if that makes any sense) despite not understanding what their doing.

But I will say that if I didnt bring my ipad I would have been ALL THE WAY screwed.

My strategy with kindergarten is to not worry so much that they get everything.  I read books to them which some get, some don't...and I think that's fine.  They're young enough that as long as you read them the story in an interesting way, they'll still be engaged, still be hearing English, and still working on listening.  No harm there.

I agree with the above post.  I try and read to all my classes, even though they might not understand.  Just reading in an interesting way and having them participate as much as possible helps.  I sometimes have a couple of students come to the front and act out what is going on in the picture.  Their favorite book so far has been "5 Little Monkeys" (the one about jumping on the bed).

Since you said they pick things up easily, you could possibly just sing the songs to them in a couple of classes without your iPad.  They probably will have remembered by that time.

I have a mix of levels in my Kindergarten class and I try to appeal to all of them.  I am not allowed to have them color or write but I think that is a perfect way to work on their motor skills and practice English.  You could try going over a different letter each day and introducing vocabulary that starts with that letter.  I use Starfall.com - they have games and videos.  Since you can't use technology, you could just go on before class and print the ABC printouts to hand out to the students after you introduce the letter and vocabulary!

Good luck!

Use lots of songs with actions.  I suggest Super Simple Songs.  There are a lot of great songs there.

Easy books are found in Genki English website.

Use flashcards and play games using the cards is a lot of fun for kids.

I teach Kindy 3 times a week. I normally only use the computer for songs (mostly because I'm not a great singer).

The rest of the time I use the white board - this was very effective with them doing the alphabet as I would draw whatever image for the letter. They got a great kick out of it.

The last day, doing numbers I had the kids come up, I gave them a number and they had to make that amount of circles. They loved it :).

The other thing is _ I believe ACTION is a better stimulation for kids this age than VISUAL AIDS. We do a simple order game that they demand again and again: Stand up, sit down, turn around, stomp your feet, clap your hands, be still, be quiet, listen, jump. They do all the actions and don't need any prep from me to see which ones they do/do not remember. It takes about 10 minutes but we do a last man standing game eliminating eveyone who doesnt do the right action

try and get the students to act out the characters in the stories you read. yeah lots of songs, don't be scared to sing and dance yourself and make yourself look silly.
Any games with flashcards like throw a ball or slap the word you say. individually, in a group race, mix it up and stick with what works
from your ipad play music and do pass the ball.
print out bingo sheets with simple vocab like colours or animals, body parts, family members, weather etc.
if you have like an alphabet magnet or just flashcard set or something, have them race to put it in order.
I have them do  a team relay race to spell out words using magnetic alphabet. they obviously can't spell at that age so i put the word up where they can see and just copy the word.
I've found students that young even like Dr.Seuss stories, the words and rhyme and rhythm are funny even to them when they have no idea of the meaning.
and yeah simple crafts, even something so simple as teaching some animal vocab and having them draw the animal. or teaching body parts and make them come up with their own creature

I agree with EBCIncheon....another thing that I find helps it putting the alphabet in order ....I have a magnetic alphabet that I arrange on the board all mixed up. I then call each student up to pick a letter in the alphabet order. We sing the abc until we get to the next letter (so A, then AB, then ABC, etc...). It helps me to identify what pronunciation is still needed and to see who still needs help in figuring out the letters.

Lastly Repetition, Repetition, Repetition.  For every topic that you teach I would spend 2 -3 classes on it  ( it took about 7 classes to do the ABC as we also learned some vocab). Keep reviewing and repeating with them. That way they remember and learn.
