I have an occasional "special" video-based English class for 4th-6th grade students. My goal for the class is to get the students applying their English in more creative ways than we get a chance to do in class.

I just put together a 40-min lesson for an animated short "Oktapodi".  It's not Pixar, but the style is similar so I think the kids will be into it. I haven't had a chance to try this lesson out on my class, as it's been canceled the past few weeks. But I've been planning this lesson for a while and am really excited about getting to do it, so I just thought I'd share in case anyone else wants to try it out.

Here's the animation:

And here's a link to a prezi I put together:

http://prezi.com/zk46ik4lc6pt/oktapodi-elementary-esl-lesson/

The prezi outlines an assignment. The class will be divided into teams, and each team will have to create and perform a short skit about "what happens next" (or Oktapodi 2). I wanted to give them a bunch of ideas for brainstorming, in case they have trouble getting started. The Word document attached has some "brainstorming cards" with the pictures and sample dialogue lines if they need more help.

Anyways, I hope this can be helpful to someone with an after school or summer camp class to fill!

Here's one for Pixar's Presto. I wanted to have a slightly longer activity, and have the students read their dialog along with the video, so I just numbered the speech bubbles to correspond to a separate sheet with numbered spaces so they could write a longer dialog (hopefully). I attached a jpg as well as the comic life file (zipped so I could upload it) in case anyone wanted to edit it to their liking (see above for the comic life software download).

Someone asked how to use For the Birds for young students. Here's what I did for my elementary Grade 3 and it worked pretty well.

First, I showed the video. Then, I used a vocab list I created on BarryFunEnglish (no PPT, sorry) to go over the different feelings expressed in the video (angry, happy, embarrassed, surprised, scared, nervous). Then, I showed the video again and asked them to yell out how the birds were feeling. Note: Explaining the difference between scared and nervous may be too advanced for such young kids, but with the help of a co-teacher, they should get it.

Next, I had them fold a paper into six squares and draw 6 emotions. This was difficult for many ... especially the spelling, so I had volunteers come to the board to draw the different emotions. That way, the lower level kids could just copy my spelling and their classmates' drawings.

Then we used their drawings to play Bingo.

I also created a Word Search on the Discovery Education site (http://puzzlemaker.discoveryeducation.com/WordSearchSetupForm.asp) to keep the kids who finished quickly busy.

If you still have time to fill, you can play hangman or word scramble.

I was surprised by how well this went over in class, I had suspected most students had seen this short clip before, but many hadn't and liked it a lot. I love incorporating films with minimal or no dialogue in class, and pixar's films are always audience pleasers.

An idea for a feature animated film with no to minimal dialogue would be the French offering "The Illusionist" (2010).  Won Oscar for best foreign film and is quite well-received.

I don't have any worksheets for this clip, but my kids really like it.  I found it on Youtube a while back.

I did something similar with high school boys with comics. I google searched a bunch of comic strips online and whited out the speaking. I had students fill in the speech bubbles. Then, I collected the papers from them and passed them all out randomly to other students. The students then had to write the story based on the dialogue they received. It went over really well and students were very creative.

This is a good idea! Kids get so creative when they have no limitations. I may do this for my lower-level classes... they become too self-conscious when speaking to me about the lesson topic. Through another medium, maybe they'll let their guard down. Thanks for the idea.

Someone had an activity for "Day and Night" on a personal webpage that I modified and created a worksheet for.  Here is the worksheet based on Tolerance and Equality.

Here's a comic dialogue worksheet I put together for the "Big Buck Bunny" short film. Students create their own dialogue after watching the video.

So, after a lot of work, I've finished my prep for winter camp.

Below is an Elementary winter camp for 3 classes. I'm travelling home for Christmas vacation with the contract renewal 4 weeks, so my school is strangely making me do a 7 day camp.  Anyway, if you have a longer camp, there is definitely enough material available in this thread to provide for a few more days. Plus, if you want to make more, wikipedia has a list of all of pixar's short films. There are a ton that haven't been covered in this thread.

Attached:
- Lesson Plan: 3 elementary classes x 45 minute lessons x 7 days.  beginner class, intermediate class, and advanced class.

- beginner worksheets: writing practice, word searches, and coloring activities. After videos and new vocabulary, i'm intending on giving my 1st and 2nd grade Elementary students these worksheets. I'm also intending to give them to my 3rd and 4th graders and homework (minus the coloring activities). also, in the next week, i'm going to edit the sheets and insert harder crossword puzzles for my advanced class of 5th graders and 6th graders. i'll use it for homework and odd minutes at the end of class.

films shown:
day 1 - for the birds
day 2 - oktapodi
day 3 - big buck bunny
day 4 - lifted
day 5 - pigeon impossible
day 6 - partly cloudy
day 7 - presto

I have finished another one this week, for Monsters Inc.
(I've also included the translation answer key for teachers)

These are awesome! Thank you so much! I have been searching for different things to do with this movie!

I took your worksheet and adapted them to fit my students. I work at a school for the blind and low-vision so hence why they are so big! I also added 3 more characters!
