I did a lesson on animals with the grades 1's and it worked really well. Attached is the lesson plan and ppt. Hope it'll be useful to you guys!

I also used this on for my grade 1s. I ended up making them draw their own made up animal afterwards. They gave names and descriptions of those animals. The categories I gave them were sky, land and water. They came up with some pretty interesting stuff. Gotta love the imaginations of children.

Here's a fun game that you can do with the lesson.  It's kind of similar to NeynaD.  We did this during camp.  I taught them about 6 or 7 different animals.  Then I had them divided into teams of 3 or 4.  One team mate would come up and role the dice.  If it was one, they would draw a paper from the "head" category.  If it was 2, the "tail" category.  3, the "body" category.  4, the "feet" category.  5, special characteristics the animal might have.  6, miss a turn or feet.

The students had to draw a paper from the category they rolled.  For example, if they rolled a 3 and they pulled out a paper that said turtle, they'd have to draw a turtle shell.
The winner of the game was the team that had at least one of each category in their drawings.  It made it really fun for the kids and it resulted in some very strange animals.
