Here is an advice lesson I used for my first period of this lesson. With advice lessons I always like to start out asking the students to share some of their problems.

After pre-teaching some vocab we watch the movie after which I try to elicit some advice on what the bird or cloud should do.

The activation part of the lesson is the speed speaking activity. I have done this in both large and small classes. If you have a big class just divide them into groups so that they each have one piece of advice and one problem. Make sure they are not the same. In smaller classes, each student just gets more problems and pieces of advice. Time them with a stopwatch to make it competitive between groups or as one if it's a small class. Don't forget to spend a moment to highlight the difference in register between giving advice through commands and giving advice with the modal 'should' or the expressions introduced at the begining of the PPT.

I never got to the final activity on the PPT but it's nice to have if your students get bored of the speed speaking activity or if they catch on really quickly and you need to move on.

I'm just starting out with this book and taught a review of this chapter today.


I've uploaded my lesson plan.  If you scroll down enough you'll be able to see the dialogue, quiz, and story I gave the the students.  I just left the dialogue and story up on the computer, and printed out that quiz and cut them up.  Students did fine on the quiz.

This is my first time teaching with a book--I've taught before, but I was always able to make my own material.  It is quite different, and more challenging as far as I'm concerned! 

I think the class was just average.  After the class I decided that I had included too much dialogue/role play, and not enough student to student interaction.  My next lessons ought to be better, and I hope that they will become increasingly useful for the rest of you out there!

Here's an advice charades/pictionary game I came up with.  Students draw a card and roll the dice to determine if they act or draw (1-3 = act 4-6 = draw).  When the other students have guessed the problem they offer a solution using: You should, if I were you, etc. 

I've included my lesson plan.  I'm still working on a review game for the chapter (Bomb Game, my students really like that format) that I'll post in the next day or two once it's finished.  I also found a worksheet on advice related idioms.  Might be useful.

I made a silly worksheet for the students to do for this lesson. I called it "MadLibs" but it's not the verb, noun, body parts, etc. sentence making like we are used to.
How this works is I have students get in groups of 2 or 3 and think of 3 problems and 3 advice. The advice and problems can be serious or silly, they don't have to match either. Then I call one random student to read a problem and one student to read an advice.
