Two ppt story books adapted to use the key sentences.
- Little Red Hen.
- A Very busy Spider.

I'm trying to do less games as my class is unruly!

EDIT: I've added the worksheet I used for The Very Busy Spider

I had to do this lesson for my Open Class (my school does the chapters out of order.)
We used this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgRC_Kl9YUg ( I shortened it and added music, but I'll upload that later)

Then we watch the listen and repeat video clips, and played the Disappearing Dialogue Game.

Then we played the dialogue game. You'll have to print out the PPT slides, cut them up and paste them on thicker paper. Each dialogue has 4 sentences. Fold up the sentences and put the 4 sentences into a bag and give one bag to each team. I have 6 teams, you can add or subtract sentences depending on your class.
When you say Go, students open the bags and unscramble the sentence. THen they read it to you. Fastest teams get points.
Then switch bags between teams. This is pretty short, but you can also put the cards on the board to review, and ask students to come up and make sentences.

Then we played Go Fish. There are 2 different decks of cards - one with only words (for advanced readers) and one with words and pictures. There are 52 cards in each deck, and this was a pair activity. I made 10 decks of picture cards and 10 decks of word cards. This took a long, long time. To save time, print the cards on cardstock, thick paper, or color paper. I had to glue colored paper to the back of the cards after I printed them, then cut them out. TOOK FOREVER.

Then, we checked that the students could understand the lesson with a conclusion PPT based on the video clip. Ask lower level students if they can make the sentences.
Hopefully someone can benefit from my 3 weeks of overtime working on this class.

I aced my Open Class, btw.

Here's an excellent intro video of Mr. Bean failing to help someone.

the one minute version (low-quality)

from 1:40 to 5:30 (high quality)

Also, this is an excellent video made last year for the old Grade 6 book. Target vocabulary is very similar. Thanks Mike Karlin!

Greets,

Last year "John Teacher" posted a pretty great "Lee Myung Pak vs Jang Mi Ran" game in the national curriculum books "Will you help me?" Thread.

I have retrofitted to reflect the key sentences and expressions of 5th grade Unit 6 "Can you help me"  Since I'm using this for Lesson 2. I have a few "How nice of you." questions even though teaching this asinine drivel kills a little bit of my soul each time I say it. (My 5th grade co-teacher is an older, conservative, traditional lady who doesn't really appreciate  any deviation from the book.)

I through in a few chapter 5 review questions just to keep them on their toes and flesh out the game.

Please let me know if you encounter any problems or if you have success with it.  My kids usually love this game.  I hope yours will too.

Thanks to John Teacher wherever he may be.

Avengers game,

My students enjoy playing these games. Two students need the help of the Avengers to diffuse a stink bomb made by the Joker (elaborate on the PPT as you wish). The two students must hunt for the Avengers. 5 students receive an Avengers card (a character from the movie) the rest receive cards posted by ramenhairteacher (all the cards are a secret).

The original two students must ask for help ("There's a bomb! Can you help me?"), the rest of the class responds with what is on their card ("Sorry, I'm cleaning my room" or "Sure!").

Give the students 1minute to find the avengers (http://www.online-stopwatch.com/bomb-countdown/full-screen/), then swap students & cards.

That's a really good idea! My classes are kind of big, so I'm doing it as a team activity, i.e. 1 student from each team comes up, and RPS to go first. They can each ask 3 students taking turns 1 at a time (I find if it's timed, the team will get angry at the slower students for taking too long to answer) to find the avengers. If they find an avenger, the team gets a point.

Have used evaninjinsari's awesome Lee Myung Pak vs Jang Mi Ran game's questions to make a trashball game to get my kids up out of their seats and really involved in class.

Basically, choose an NBA team, answer a question then throw dice to see how many throws your team gets.

You can wad up a ball of paper, or use a real ball and paper trash box - but the kids really love this game, it's a nice way to sneak some English in :)

We had the students do a role play this time.  We spent 20 minutes reading and discussing the story, 5 minutes rehearsing and 15 minutes in role play.  I have 5 tables of 6 students each.
Heads up!  In discussion, some students didn't watch the animation very carefully, they chose to read instead. (well-intentioned) They thought that Dr. Potter helped Jane and were confused.
We couldn't find images for the story, so I adapted the pdf on the website.  I attached the images as well.

I think you uploaded a draft of your PPT instead of the final.  I made a PPT including your matching section.  Kids all loved it. At the end of class, we practiced the role play for next week and I went through all of the lines with teach groups character speaking their part.

Enjoy ^^

two things.

the Lee Myoung-bak game - I edited it a little to remove the "Can you help me (verb)" structure, as I've not taught them it. I find the big fat woman showing up and the screaming noise hilarious by the way.

The cat game - you can use the first slide in a hundred different ways. Here's how I use it:

game - girls vs boys. use student selector http://www.barryfunenglish.com/enter/tDartBoardSelector.php (make 2 teams)
blank out all sentences. first, select a girl. if she can give one of the sentences, click it and give her team a point. then the boy's turn. do the same, select a boy with the dartboard, if he can say one of the sentences it gets clicked and his team get a point. Go back and forth like this until all sentences have been clicked. when all have been done, do again, but with white pictures (2nd slide). then, for bonus, if time, offer 8 points to any one person who can say all from the white screen in 10 seconds. let them keep trying until someone does. 15-20'
