Use this to challenge your well-performing students. This lesson helps students to:
1) learn more polite expressions in asking for directions:
Would you please direct me to ____________?
How do I get to _____________?
How would I get to ___________?
2) expand their vocabulary and increase fluency in explaining directions with expressions such as "across from," "on the corner of ___ street and ___ street," "it's on your left/right," and terms like "block".
This pptx contains a drill portion at the beginning, so that place names can be reviewed. For classes with mixed level students, the teacher may choose to use only this part. The pptx also contains an interactive part where they explain how to get places using the terms they learned.
I highly recommend that one becomes familiar with all the slides before using the pptx in class!
It requires PowerPoint 2007 or later version. I took the map from bogglesworldesl.com site and inserted it into my slides. I plan to upload a PowerPoint 2003 version shortly.
Your feedback is welcome and appreciated.

For grade 6 lesson 6 in the textbook "It's next to the bank here is a good icebreaker to grasp the students interests. Go to youtube and type in rat giving directions scene. It should be the first video and the length is 2:21.
You can use this for any lesson regarding directions.

Giving directions PPT with "map game". First, give students directions using TL "in front of, opposite, next to" etc, then give the students a location and ask them to give you directions. Seemed to work really well.

This is a Sonic game using Daejeon's template. The scoreboard isn't working on my computer, but everything seems a-ok. The maps aren't pretty looking but I hope the kids like the game.
Edited because everything wasn't okay. Fixed some point slides and changed a question because of a picture error. Please let me know if you notice anything else amiss.

"Two Blocks Down, Turn to the Left, it's on the Right-hand Side of the Street" a classroom sing-along song by Cab Calloway, with illustrated lyrics for vocabulary acquisition. My children enjoy singing this song. It helps them to remember key sentences, too.

Thanks to weridgirlinkorea for her amazing roleplays. Changed a few sentences to make suitable for the sixth grade. Feedback most welcome. I will not be doing this lesson for another six weeks so got time to edit it.

This is a short or long activity i did with my classes. You take the map, print it out. write down the names of each building or place on little scrap pieces of paper. Put those little papers, folded, into a cup. Print out blank map's for the class. have one student come up, pick a piece of paper out of the cup. Mark a starting point so everyone in the class knows it. have the student give the directions to the place. It's a great way to have the students show their speaking skills and practice, while giving the other students a chance to use their listening skills. It is a great way to have the students hear a fellow student give directions, and allows them to practice listening to someone who is not their teacher.

Here is a review test I gave my class. It has more than lesson 6, but it was a great review for the test they had. You can add more or change which lessons you have.

It's my lesson plan to teach reading about some expressions of directions and what to be able to do at the place. I hope some one can get some idea from my plan.

Anybody else find the dialogue for the 2nd period video to be absolutely terrible? The girl and the man spoke too fast, and the man had an odd thick accent (it didn't even sound Korean to me). It left my students confused. This is the second time this has happened with this book (the other time was Lesson 4-When is your birthday?, period 2).
Thanks to the folks who posted on here. I was able to use I was having a really hard time coming up with ideas.
Here's a word search with key words. Take about 15-20 minutes. I let them work in teams and once their team is finished, I check all the team's papers. If everyone is right, that team wins and gets some stamps on their stamp sheet (I also did 2nd and 3rd place teams).

There's always the trusty Robot Game where one student, who is blindfolded or has their eyes covered, and their classmate behind them guide them around the paths of desks to get to Point B. Students in the crowd shout the direction for the 'robot' to follow.
Don't forget the old standby 'Where is Think Cafe?"

Here is a worksheet I did based on a template that others have posted and using some material from grade 5 worksheet. Thanks to all that I have "borrowed" from in the past. I hope this is useful to someone.

MUSIC
For help with those prepositions, repetition couldn't be more tuneful than CCR.
As always, you may find it helpful to strip the audio track and use the pictures and text as reading/vocabulary material, first, concurrently, or subsequent to the singing.
Unfortunately, with PPT, the timing is linked to the cpu speed, and it varies from machine to machine. If you find the slides are not in synch with the music, you can adjust them accordingly, or switch to manually clicking through on each slide.
