Lesson 5: The World of Robots
« on: December 09, 2010, 03:19:00 PM »
This lesson is geared toward Grade 1 Middle School. Students practice past tense verbs using this form: 'When I (verb), the robot (verb)'

I opened the class by talking about famous robots - that really got their attention. Then I told them about a recent conversation I had with a robot called Robotboy (they all jeer in disbelief, of course, but it's a fun way to engage them.)

I led them through the powerpoint and got them to repeat the sentences after me. It may be useful to say, from the outset, that they will be tested later on to draw their attention. Once the powerpoint is done, hand out the worksheet and get them to fill in the missing past tense verb.

You'll see the worksheet content repeated 2 or 3 times - just cut in three once copied.

I wasn't sure where to post my lesson for this chapter. It might help a little. It's mainly over Can and Cannot. I have a worksheet and powerpoint.

Here is my lesson. I used a few graphics from two above powerpoints and the idea of your dream robot, but changed it a bit.

This pp is for two lessons. First half ends with bingo. Go through, what is this robot doing? It is playing the violon, it is running fast, etc.... Then, do classroom bingo for what can you do well? Can you sing well? Can you speak English well? Etc... I put english only because for bingo games I require it because I KNOW they have the vocabulary and ability to use English only. All other things I never require it. IF They need to use Korean, I make them ask the coteacher. Otherwise, they just resort to asking the questions in Korean (has happened in other classes of mine.) In my class, the bingo took about 15-20 minutes.

The second class we will review a bit from last week and then design a dream robot. I will split them into groups of six and each group will have six pieces of paper. For two minutes, each student will draw the head, body, arms, legs etc... of a robot, and then pass it. In the end, each student will have drawn each section of the body of the robot, for 6 different robots. After they are finished, I will have them choose the best robot and write about what it can/can't do. Then, they present.

I will also do some type of warm up/starter. Enjoy!

Hey Terrifictor100~ I was trying to view your prezi and nothing is moving on it.  Did you put the connection bars on it to move from one place to another? Can you take a look and let us know when it's all fixed?

I'm sorry if you can't open the powerpoint. I saved it under ppt so it shouldn't be a problem to open. I was able to open it just now so I'm not sure what the problem may be. I know my school recently undated my computer to pptx so sometimes I save it only in pptx, but this file is ppt. Sorry...

I just finished making my lesson for this. I modified one of the earlier powerpoints and added the phrase "I wish I could" because I will be using this with my grade 2s and advanced Grade 1 students.

I've also attached a worksheet. Students must use the question and answer format to find students who CAN do each of the things (it's fun, students love these activities). The worksheet activity is explained in the powerpoint. The second page is optional. I'm pretty sure this won't last the whole class, so I included those extra questions to make them think a little more...

Also, I will be doing the robot creating activity next week in which each group has six people and each person draws some part of the robot, and then they describe what the robot can do.

Here's a worksheet activity:

Part A: Students ask eachother Can you...(whatever is in the chart). Students respond yes, I can/No I cannot.

Part B: Yes, I can bingo. Teacher reads out the questions (ex: can you swim). If they can swim they X that box. The first person with 3-5 Xs wins.
