Soldiers and ninjas is quite fun. I did this last year to good success. Read the instructions attached on how to play. I just give them a paper and ask them to say how to get there. then the rsp. if all the ninjas die, the king wins and i let the next group up.

Soldiers and Ninjas was awesome! Thanks for that idea. I revised/combined the map and instructions page to help give the kids a more visual run down of the rules. Worked well for me, they understood it immediately.

Here's an elimination game, revised from someone else, for asking for and giving directions. I think I used it for the reading section in the text book but it's also good for review, gets every student involved. Hope it helps!

Here is a Mario powerpoint, pretty similar to YBM 6th grade lesson 6, but some of the questions have been changed to match the dialogue in lesson 5. Thanks to the powerpoint creator and those who made maps that I took. Enjoy!

How exactly do you play the elimination game? It looks good but I'm confused about what to do with all those cards. Could you please post how to play it? Thanks!

Here is a ppt and script I made for the Play Together 1 on page 73. I could not find a script for this activity in the teacher'sbook or an answer key so I made my own. Feel free to use it. I also made a ppt for checking the answers. I am having students ask the question with the pictures in the order they are on the bottom of the page and drawing an arrow or writing the word in the space on the map.

S ( soldier / knight)1 asks to ninja 1. "where is the cafe?" when the ninja answers, they RPS. Whoever loses is out of the game and next ninja and knight play. i do it that way so everyone has a chance. depending on time, you can go until there are no more knights or ninjas. whoever is left wins. if you are short on time, just let the king win and let the next 2 groups come up.

if the ninja or knight gets another turn, then they can start from where ever, doesnt really matter. only thing that does is eliminating the opposite team. my students love this game so much. students should be able to give basic directions. if they are struggling, work it through together.

in this lesson they confuse "its on the left/right" depending on which way they are going. you can explain that in your lesson. left and right side changes when you turn.

An information gap map exercise. There are 2 versions of the map, each missing 5 places, the students ask where something is and the other gives them directions to figure out what number it is.

It took me awhile to make this, as I am computer inept and couldn't find just the right one online. So if you see any errors, please let me know so I can fix it!

I didn't like the book's instructions for Play Together 3 so I changed it up a bit. I still used the map on page 215 of their book but instead of writing a bunch of directions and then saying the number of each direction, I created a couple of slides with directions to different places. The students had to read the directions to themselves and either circle the destination on their map or draw the path and turns leading to the place. Have them use a different color for each destination. Then we checked answers. This is a simple PPT and only has 5 destinations. The apple tree one stumped them for a bit and they had to go back through the directions a second time but it worked out.

There's no actual dialog, so you can have the students say what they think the people are saying ("Go straight this way," etc.).

I'm using it for Day 1 tomorrow. Then I'll ask the students to guess the topic of the new lesson (they usually cheat and look at the title in the book, but whatever).

I found this Korean TV clip which works great for this lesson, plus some pronunciation practice ("th" sound and "square" vs "scare"). It was in the old national curriculum thread...

This is the "longer" version of this clip. There's a shorter one out there, too. (About half as long.)

The PPT focuses on the first guy (who is apparently a comedian named Jun-ha). Actually I found the PPT here: http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,31618.msg228191.html#msg228191, so thanks, Pedro82!!

I added a couple more slides to the end, which are screen shots from where Junha finds Think Coffee. (I re-entitled the video file "Where is Think Coffee" since that's what Junha's looking for.)

It's great for the kids to see Koreans speaking English (in New York), and hear the way Americans answer their questions (rather than just the basic "Go straight" that they already seem to know).
