Since this lesson is all about directions, and since the Hello World has a little dialog about Broadway, I've decided to go with a New York/Curious George theme.

- Worksheet with functions, vocab, dialog, a reading comprehension activity and an (easier) listening comprehension activity to go with this Curious George clip ( )
- Simple vocab PPT- I'm just going to review the prepositions orally, so they're not included
- An I Spy PPT with a few pictures from NYC

I also made a prezi to go with this lesson...students will learn a bit about Manhattan, then navigate through a map of the Upper West Side near Broadway, going to real places like the American Folk Art Museum, St Luke's Hospital, Central Park, etc.  I'll attach a link to that when I'm happy with it.

I found this activity from another post in the National Text Book section and have revamped it to fit this unit more directly.  It is a Lucky Wheel game.

Here's a Mario game, it's the template with lots of animations and characters from the game. Thanks to the original template creator (you are awesome) and the people who posted the other games. I stole a lot of maps and pictures!

Great post erin.stauber! I'll probably have to remove the "unscramble" slides since my students aren't quite at that level yet. Everything else is just so well done!

Thanks! Glad you like it, but be careful....deleting slides can mess up the hyperlinks (I do not know how to fix such things as I am only adept at cutting and pasting), so if you do take things out, make sure to keep the original slide and change the content!

  • This is the fate of all who oppose me.
This lesson file is a comparison of American cities and Korean cities with the illustration that NYC and DC at least use a grid system which is common in city planning and then draw contrast with Korean cities which are chaotic. I don't introduce places like post office or hospital again so you may want to assure they are pre taught.

Then I have a simple interactive ppt game in the same file where you give directions verbally while the students sit with their hands on their heads. Then when you finish they name the building that the spy is hiding in. You may want to look over the order before you start. City one is easy because it is NY-grid whereas 2 is Daegu. I can't assure that this "game" will be all too impressive but look it over if you feel like it.

I made a list of directions you can read to your students to go along with the spy game. Feel free to use and edit at will. Please let me know if you find mistake / inaccuracies.

I'm sorry for not including the intruction. click the car to go. if the car stop (shopping mall), the student must say the question (how do/can i go to the shopping mall?) next is the answer following the car's direction... for the scoring: the picture above the  A is stealer( steal the other team score), B is banker( bank their score so that if stealer comes out the other team can not steal scores..the coins(how many) and the dollar (it could be 10 ) is a score..

The first three PPTs are really good for practice giving and following directions.  I took them from previous lessons/books and adapted the target language from "Where is (the)..." to "How can I get to (the)..."  Thank you, whomever created the originals.

The hangul document is a two page intro handout on lesson 6 with info gap/dialogues from the book, etc.--my co-teacher found it on indischool.

The song/video is related to phones/phone numbers/making phone calls etc.  Catchy tune.

Happy teaching.

Here is a great worksheet for Look and Speak.

Instead of having students write the answers to the blanks in their textbook or notebook, I changed to parameters of the task.  For each picture they fill in the blank, circle mistakes and correct them, as well unscramble sentences.

If you already did this exercise, this worksheet is great for a warmup (there is a maze at the bottom where students can practice turn left, go straight, etc.)

Here are PPT & materials I made for lesson 6. I've used others PPTs and worksheets and modified it to fit the level of my students.

PPT1 = Intro. to vocabulary used in giving directions. Include Building Vocab. and a map to practice in the class.

HW2= Homework worksheet I made where they have to write direction looking at the map.

Hope this is helpful!

Everyone always post the wheel game on waygook but it never seems to work. When I click on the "spin" it goes to the next page.
