Topic: (대교 Daegyo) Grade 5, Lesson 7 - "How Beautiful She Is!" Read 22135 times

The entire grammar for this chapter seems strange to me. The pattern "How (adjective) he/she/you (verb)." (How beautiful she is) seems awkward to me. It might work in poetry or some very specific circumstance, but in general, I can't remember ever having said or heard How pretty she is./ How handsome he is., etc. My coteacher told me that she also learned this structure when she was in school, but I still think it's awkward. Given that this structure is the entire basis for the chapter, I think it's worth a good pondering. What are your thoughts?

It's bad. It's supposed to be "she is beautiful" "she is so beautiful" or "wow, look how beautiful she is".

Here's a Guess Who game for period 2 with a practice section beforehand.

I wrote a name secretly on a piece of paper and the students had to guess who it was.
Eg - S1: "He has brown hair."
- Teacher answers True or False.
- If true, teacher eliminates all characters who don't have brown hair.

We played twice as a class so they understood and then I gave them printed boards to play with a partner.

they have this gameboard on page 201. it is colorful so you can use it. I used it today and they loved it.

Baskin Robbins 31

I made this really simple Baskin Robbins Game as a warm up for period 3. The kids love it and get pretty ruthless when trying to get each other out!

I also agree that this sentence structure is a bit out dated or at best should be reserved for Pros.

So my coteacher is doing an open lesson on this topic for about 15 other english teachers from different schools in our area. I begged her to pick a different lesson or to let help me modify the sentance construction because it was SO horribly bad but of course that wasn't an option. Sigh. Anyways, here is an activity based slightly on the review lesson in the book. On the worksheet provided students can draw a picture of a classmate and write 3 describing sentences about them. Then the students fold their paper into an airplane and throw it at the teacher. The teacher will pick some airplanes at random, read the descriptions to the class and then they have to guess who it might be.

This activity was my CT's idea and while I think students will have fun getting to draw and throw things at her, I am also afraid that some students will be perfectionists about the drawing/airplane part and take forever, or other students could just be jerks and write that other students are ugly. However, if it works out I think it could be good for lessons 2, 4 or review. HATE this lesson.

I wonder if you set strict guidelines that they can only use descriptive words, (long/short/big/small/black/brown) and not subjective words like beautiful or ugly, it might be a bit better!

Also, I often use a bomb timer (there's a bunch, but they like the bomb) when I don't want kids to take too long with a short activity (perfectionists) it helps because they get all anxious and try to beat the bomb!

This is a simple board game for Period 1. It's basically the same one that's in the book, just simplified a bit for my students, and the rules are a bit different (flip a coin instead of "Win with rock, go 3 spaces, win with scissors, go 2 spaces, win with paper, go 1 space--which is terribly confusing for my kids for some reason). The board in the book is more fun-looking of course, but my kids like when I print stuff up for them. Feel free to add anything you want.

So I spoke to a Korean friend who is an English linguist about this phrase. This is a common Korean phrasing. It isn't in the national curriculum, the curriculum just says that 5th graders need to be able to describe others.

We taught my classes that this phrase is antiquated, instead they should say "Wow! She is beautiful!" since the phrase is exclamatory. Here is a ppt for introducing the terms. I modified the one generously made at the beginning of the year. There are pictures of my co-t and I, please change them to your own...

This is a variation of the Guess Who game because my co-teacher would like a game with less explanation.
Basically we will tell the students the different characters that are available and how they could describe them first.
Then get one student to face the class.
The rest of the students need to describe the character that comes up on the screen and the one student facing them will have to guess who it is.

I agree fully that this lesson is horribly awkward and outdated. However, after a long discussion with my co-teacher, the grammar needs to be taught for testing purposes. He is going to explain that this grammar: "How (adjective) (pronoun) (verb)." is good to know as part of longer sentences, but it should not be used as an expression alone.

I found the easiest way to fix this lesson for now is to change the main expression from "How beautiful she is!" to "Look how beautiful she is!" I find that sounds WAY more natural.

Anyway, here is my ppt I used for period one to help practice the main vocabulary in this form. I also include some examples of how this grammar is used in longer sentences at the end. I basically keep stressing that the expression "How wonderful it is" should never be used alone. It's ok for reading and writing but not ok to say aloud. Hope that helps some.

Okay, this might be risky, but I think I'm going to try this:

DOUBLE RAINBOW

This guy is having such a moment that he's only capable of speaking sentences that are simple enough for your kids to understand... provided that you teach them a few new words: "bright", "intense", "vivid", "all the way", and perhaps "across" and "complete". That's a bunch of words that aren't part of the lesson, but I think it might be worth it if they can understand a guy who's speaking completely genuine English, even if he's clearly insane.

"Oh my God!"
"It's so beautiful!"
"It's so bright!"
"It's a full rainbow!"
"What does it mean?"

Of course, maybe the surrealness of the video will totally go over the kids' heads and they'll just be confused and think it's really weird. But I wanted to put the idea out there.

Drawing Monsters from teacher's descriptions.

See PPT attached, and the description document for teachers.

Students listen and draw (in groups) the monster that the teacher describes. "He has one big eye. He has short hair...." etc.
