Interested in TEFL?
« on: April 19, 2012, 08:09:55 am »
For those of us that have only got a bachelors degree, and are teaching here in Korea (or anywhere for that matter), getting a TEFL qualification is probably one of the best things you can do - both for your students and for yourself. That and get a really good camera to capture your moments with :)

Anyway, I wrote a blog post about i-to-i's TEFL qualifications, and I think it'd be great if you would give it a read.

It's right here - http://tinyurl.com/7djxdzk

that i-to-i program sounds great.

I was really unhappy with my TEFL certification program. It was very academic and almost irrelevant to what I actually do in class. And besides that, the articles were very bad imitations of academic writing style by clearly non-native speakers. =/
grrr, $300.
do not recommend.

Sorry to hear that! Yeah some programs seem to be really dodgy, but the one I did was actually really useful and relevant. They taught me so much stuff I wish I knew before I started teaching.  Glad to be able to share one of the good ones :)

I got my 120 hour certification through i-to-i actually, about 3 years ago. Had a 20 hour weekend course and then the rest of it online. It was a pretty good course altogether. Fairly easy to actually pass the online stuff and gives plenty of practice writing lesson plans!

I did the 20 hour course too. I was thinking about doing the 100 hour online course this year, if I have time.

You really do write a lot of lesson plans with the online course! And the cool thing is you get guidance the whole way through the course. Depending on the extra modules you select, you might have to write more lesson plans than others.

Are you comfortable giving the name/provider of the course so others may tread more carefully when selecting a program?

More than 3 years ago, I completed a 100-hour online course through ITTT (or search "teflonline.net").  I enjoyed studying and working with my tudor via email, and I even refer back to some of my materials from time to time.  Moreover, all of my Korean employers have readily accepted my certification, so it's certainly been beneficial.

My only complaint with ITTT is getting some support from their customer service department.  I have needed to order new copies of my certificate, for, as you may know, some bosses can misplace our important documents. It's either been a long, painful process or met with a simple refusal to issue a new one (even though I am paying for it).

OP- Thanks for sharing

I'm interested to hear who the "dodgy" TEFL course was done through too, if that's okay?

I read up on ITTT when I was looking into TEFL, and they had some great rates and good reviews too. I ended up going with i-to-i because they had a great special - $190 for a 130 hour course. They might not have the same special on now, but they have specials sometimes and if you ask the person you deal with at i-to-i, you might be able to get a small discount or even an added bonus module (hence my extra 10 hours).

I did an i-to-i qualification about eight years ago and it was useless, however I have head that they have improved dramatically since then.......

I have over ten years teaching experience and four separate certificates, the only one that I would recommend is the CELTA, even though it is aimed at teaching adults I use nearly everything I learnt in on the course in my lessons.......

Absolutely, CELTA is far more detailed and is the most comprehensive option of the two (CELTA and TEFL). I am only suggesting i-to-i because I did their course recently and feel that it was very good value for money.
