Here is an information gap activity I did. Two maps with different places missing. The students have to give directions to the place. If you want to make it a game, I gave them a dice to roll to see how many points they get for giving directions correctly!

Extension idea for the game on page 113:

You can turn it into a speed writing group game.

Instead of students writing individually put them into groups. Put up a picture for the sentence (same as in the book). Then, every student has to write the word down quickly on the same board, one at a time. Which ever group finishes first is the winner for that round.

I made an information gap activity for this chapter.
They have to ask for and give directions to places in school.
We played it in teams of 3 against 3. At the end, my co-teacher and I asked students "Where is the ___." and gave stickers for correct answers.

We also did a warm-up activity of having them stand in line by their student number and say "I'm first!" "I'm twenty-second!" etc. We let them do this twice to get it right, the class with the fastest speed wins a sticker for everyone! It is a real hit.

The game looks really good but have you tried it with your students yet? To me it looks tremendously difficult. Maybe your students are really high level or something but my students would not be even close to being able to do to this. Appreciate the post though. Keep them coming!

Here is a treasure map activity.

You can use the map in quite a few ways.

I printed out a color copy, laminated it and wrote down the locations of 7 treasures.

As a listening activity, I gave them their own copies, then directions and had them circle the locations of the treasures.

I told them each square was a block.

It was good to laminate my copy so I could write on the map with permanent marker, and erase it for future uses.

I told the full story of Jack and the Beanstalk.
Here are the worksheets I made (designed to be printed as double sided and then cut in half).
On the third one, the interview/survey questions are "do you think Jack was brave?" "do you think Jack was clever?" etc. They wander around taking friends names who gave yes answers.

Story Time Game

Some people call this game Sparkle. It is a version of the same game, but my students couldn't say sparkle and were having a hard time understanding it so I simplified it to just the DIE game.

You write a word on the board or power point related to the lesson. Select a student to start. They say the first letter of the word. The next student says the next letter. When the letters are all finished the next student says the word or a phrase using the word. The student after that DIES. If you let all of your students yell DIE, they really like it. Then you start again with the first letter. If a student messes up or doesn't follow the order they DIE and you continue where the last correct student left off. The last student standing gets a point for their team.

Here's a "BANG!" reading game for Period 3. The concept is the same as the Sparkle/DIE/Baskin 31 games, but I changed it up a little bit. The game tends to fall apart once the kids figure out they can count ahead to see who dies, so I have only one word per slide to keep their attention a bit longer.

Play is simple: each student reads the word on the screen. When they see Yosemite Sam, either that student is out or that student can "shoot" the next one in line; whichever way you want to play it. The last student standing gets a point or candy or whatever.

A cowboy game to practise ordinals.

Make sure the students know ordinal numbers 1st > 10th first.

First demonstrate the game with CT/student.
Put one hand behind your back and after 3,2,1,draw reveal your hand. Add the total of the two students' hands together (e.g. 3 fingers on one student's hand, 1 finger on another student's hand = 4 = fourth). First student to correctly say the ordinal number wins and 'shoots' their partner (ppt will play a gunshot sound).

After practicing a few times you can get students to walk around the classroom with some wild west music playing and when the music stops they must have a duel with their new partner. Loser sits down. Winners continue until there is only one student left, they are the fastest gun in the west etc etc.

With the ppt. put the sound and ppt files in the same folder. When you move the mouse over the sound icon it will make the noise of a gunshot.

1. tic tac toe. draw on the board a giant grid (maybe 10x10 or 12x12, more boxes the better) split the class into two groups. they choose a question like a bomb game, but then they put a mark on the board trying to get 6 in a row.
2. word search
3. sleeping elephants - working in groups of 4, they number themselves 1-4, everyone put they heads down, all the 1's look at the screen and remember a word or letter, same for 2's... then they work together to make a sentence or word.
4. magic gourd bomb game - answer a question then choose to give or keep
5. kws - 20 sey words and sentences from the unit, i use it for review at the beginning of every class, speaking they translate
