I made a basic power point for this lesson. My co-teacher asked me to use the phrase, "have a good ___." Good luck to all of you! ;)

I tried to play battleships ith my students and it did not turn out well so my co-teacher suggested the following activities.  We had the students watch a Mr. Bean's video and complete a worksheet.  The video is a bit long but my students enjoyed it.  A better version of the video can also be found on Youtube.

My students recently talked about how they want to move around more in class.  I was able to do this when I was teaching in Japan, but space is extremely limited in Korean schools.  You would think that it would be more limited in Japan, but whatever.  I know of a few things to do, but does anyone have any suggestions for 5th grade activities? 

IF YOU CAN USE THE GYM (I can’t T_T):  Game = “Gym Tag”, or “Onigoko”
Get some soccer tank-tops from your school’s sports shack and put them on everyone….doesn’t matter what color, just as long as they have one on.  Tape 8 or so vocabulary pictures to the gym walls (spread them out, of course) and carry a second set of them as flashcards.  It’s good to glue them to cardboard-like paper.  Have your class stand in the middle of the gym.  Ask where BLAH BLAH BLAH is and have your students point to that particular vocabulary word’s picture.  For example, “Where is the ‘swimming’ picture?  Do you see ‘swimming’?”  Choose a boy and a girl, or however many people you want, to be IT.  I usually had the ones that wanted to be it do Rock, Paper, Scissors to find out who could be IT first.  Have the people that are IT take off their soccer tank-tops and throw them in a pile, somewhere out of the way.  Explain to the class that everyone that gets tagged has to take off their tank-top and put it there, so they don’t slide on them.  Send everyone that is not IT to one of the pictures hanging on the walls and keep the students that are IT in the middle of the gym. 

THE PROCESS: Talk to the people that are IT and decide what picture you want the class to search for.  Say the target sentence and have the class repeat after you.  Next, say the answer with the people that are IT, and then hold the card up to show the students (I usually delay this, but I hold the card up for the lower-level students, so they can remember the vocabulary better).

After you say the answer, the people that are IT should chase and try to tag everyone that is trying to get to the safe-zone, which is where the selected picture has been taped.  Make sure that the kids that are IT know they can’t hover around the selected pictures….there has to be some sort of safe distance.  If a student makes it safely to the selected picture and touches it, then they are, of course, safe.  If a student is tagged, then they are automatically IT, also.  They have to take off their soccer tank-top and start chasing other people.  Start this process over again with ALL of the people that are IT always returning to the middle of the gym before you ask the target question again.  For this particular lesson, you can focus on 4 different things, but have 2 times for it…that way the students have to listen.  I suggest putting them on the opposite sides of the gym, though.  Here’s an example:

TARGET QUESTION: What time do you _________?
VOCABULARY WORDS (pictures on the wall): do homework (8pm and 5pm), get up (7:30am and 8am), eat dinner (6pm and 7pm), go home (2:40pm and 4pm)

DIALOGUE:
Teacher and people that are IT: (select a vocabulary word/picture)
Teacher: “What time do you eat dinner?  1, 2…”
Class: “What time do you eat dinner?”
Teacher and people that are IT: “We (or I) eat dinner at 6pm!”
Class: (start running to the ‘eat dinner 6pm’ picture)

OBJECT OF THE GAME: To see who actually survives and doesn’t get tagged. 


It’s possible that this might not work for this particular lesson, but it’s still a general game idea.  If you have really low-level students, then they’ll probably get confused with having two times for the same thing.  My students, at least most of them, are pretty good at English, so I think they would understand.

If this explanation is confusing, please let me know.  It’s been really hot lately in my school, heh heh.  Anyway, like I said, I REALLY wish that I could do something like this, but almost every room is being used in my school until at least 4pm every school day. 

I hope that some of you can do this game because it’s a lot of fun.  I played it with my old After School class here in Korea and they enjoyed it a lot. Cheers (^v^)/.

I've had it all finished for a little while but I've been hoarding them... sorry. Here are my introduction for the lesson as well as 'Time Bingo' boards and cut outs. With the bingo game, I had one class of students make the boards and laminated them so that they can be used over and over. Then I laminated my clock pieces for calling cards and put velcro on them to attach them to a game board so I don't loose the pieces and I can check that I have all of them at the end of every game. If you have just a little time, ask your teacher about the time they do a certain activity and have them draw the time and make the answer sentence. If you have a lot of time to fill, ask the question and then have a random student draw a clock and answer with the time. You must make sure you have a quiet class for that one to work though. The file is in PDF form because of the special fonts that I'm sure no one will have. Sorry that you can't change it!

I found that my students were struggling with the numbers and clocks idea so I pulled some workbook materials and put it into two worksheets. The first is a reading comprehension worksheet as well as writing about themselves. This is more advanced but I figured I would throw it out there. The second sheet has clocks they have to read the written time and draw the hands, read the clock time and circle the correct written time, and reading and writing numbers. Hopefully this is useful for some of your students. Good luck with teaching your lessons!
