Lessons that worked well for my middle school students
« on: December 24, 2010, 10:07:36 AM »
Hi guys,

Here are some of the lessons that worked really well for me this year. I teach at a middle school, but my girls comprehension level is quite high, especially 3rd grade, so I'm sure my third grade lessons can be adapted for high school lower grade.

1st grade - Fruit salad (they loved this lesson, make sure you dress up as a chef to make the lesson even more fun)

2nd grade - Story making (get the whole class to participate by splitting the students into groups, each group must make a sentence to join in with the story. Make sure you correct their sentences as you go along. This will help to consolidate their learning.)

3rd grade - making story books (this can easily be used for 2nd grade as well)
job interview (this is a 2 part lessons. the first part is the shipwreck scenario. you can  search this online. this part is to make sure they speak english during their group discussion. the 2nd part is about their presentation skill, so they can speak Korean during the group discussion, but they must present well, get them to be creative)
Kpop (this was a fun lesson. they translated the songs from Korean to English. I have attached 2 songs for your perusal, but you can find many other songs online.)

Hope you guys enjoy this.

Cheers

Rose

Wow!  That fruit salad lesson just have been insanely expensive!  Did you pay for the fruit yourself?

Hey I really like the translating song lyrics idea.

How exactly did you run the class? Did you just give them the Korean lyrics and tell them to translate it, then check it with the English lyrics you have?

It's a really great idea, I'm just trying to think of the best way to present it to my class.

THANKS by the way :D great stuff...

I did the translating song thing for both 2nd and 3rd grade middle school last semester...just used different songs...how i did it was i played the songs just so some of the kids who didn't know the song could get familiar with it...then i had them work in groups of 2-4 students and just had them translate the korean version....towards the end of class i gave them the english version and we would review together...then we actually would sing the english version all together...the best one that worked so far was love love love by ft island for singing it in english

I've done the story making with putting all the sentences together but haven't tried the making a book part so have to give that a try in the spring....

Thanks ^^
